Social Media Marketing Specialist (Unpaid Role)

Communications Department

Commitment: 5–10 hours per week

Location: Fully Remote

About A Free Bird

A Free Bird is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization based in New York City and operating fully remotely. We empower children affected by cancer to explore their artistic passions through art, music, writing, acting, singing, and other creative mediums. Creative expression plays a vital role in healing, confidence, and self-discovery—and our work helps amplify the voices and stories of the children we serve.

Role Overview

A Free Bird is seeking 2–3 Social Media Marketing Specialist to join our Communications Department. This role focuses on developing engaging, mission-driven digital content that increases awareness, community engagement, and supporter growth across our social platforms.

This position is ideal for individuals with hands-on experience creating social media content and designing graphics using Canva or similar platforms.

This is an unpaid volunteer opportunity.

Responsibilities

Social Media Content Creation

  • Develop engaging posts for Instagram, LinkedIn, Facebook, and other platforms
  • Create visually compelling graphics using Canva
  • Draft captions aligned with A Free Bird's brand voice and mission
  • Assist with campaign-based content (fundraising, events, awareness months, etc.)

Content Planning & Collaboration

  • Contribute ideas for social media campaigns and engagement strategies
  • Collaborate with the Communications, Multimedia, and Marketing teams
  • Support content calendars and posting schedules

Brand & Engagement

  • Ensure consistency in tone, messaging, and visual identity
  • Monitor engagement and suggest ways to improve reach and interaction

Qualifications

  • Experience creating social media content (portfolio or examples preferred)
  • Proficiency in Canva (required)
  • Strong writing skills for captions and short-form content
  • Understanding of current social media trends and digital engagement
  • Ability to work independently in a remote environment
  • Passion for nonprofit storytelling, arts, or youth advocacy is a plus

Commitment Expectations:

  • Attend our 30-minute virtual team meetings every Tuesday and Thursday
  • Communicate proactively and work collaboratively with fellow volunteers
