Job description

Our company is committed to being trusted voices of light and truth reaching hundreds of millions of people worldwide.
The Deseret News Politics and the West team is looking for a reporter to cover compelling stories of national interest in the West based out of our Salt Lake City newsroom. The reporter will work with editors to help grow the publication's national brand and contribute principled, values-based ideas to the team. We are especially interested in reporters who know how to cover a story from multiple angles, who bring nuance to their writing and reporting, and who start from a place of curiosity and not judgement.
We'd prefer a candidate with an understanding of the West and issues related to land, water, growth, and energy, including the impact of the economy on each.
This position will primarily work in our offices in Salt Lake City, Utah.
Job expectations:
  • Develop and pitch story ideas
  • Write thoughtful and engaging articles.
  • Able to travel when necessary.
  • Regularly communicate with editors and meet deadlines.
  • Engage on social media and help grow the Deseret News following.

Skills necessary:
  • At least two years of reporting and editing or related experience.
  • A bachelor's degree
  • A strong but thoughtful voice.
  • Willing to take regular feedback and work collaboratively with multiple teams.
  • An ability to understand multiple perspectives.
  • Careful, detail-oriented approach to reporting.
