Job description

Job Summary:

The Mid-Level Low Voltage Designer designs and implements technology, electrical systems, and specifications for project plans in coordination with internal and external business partners and with assistance and guidance from the Technology and Electrical Designers. Utilizing CAD and Revit software, the Mid-Level Designer designs for new and existing projects and facilities including residential, commercial, and industrial as well as city and federal projects. This position coordinates projects closely with department leaders and other disciplines and functions to provide complete constructability plans, specifications, and reports. The position will conduct occasional site surveys and verify existing project conditions and progress.


Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Read and interpret related industry codes and standards (i.e., NEC and FGI), and then incorporate relevant codes and standards into designs.
  • Prepare floor plans showing low voltage device layouts, cable pathways, equipment, etc., and verify plans with engineers.
  • In collaboration with engineers, develop equipment room sizes during the SD and DD phases of projects and prepare calculations of equipment electrical loads and cooling loads.
  • Prepare revisions, such as ASIs, and sketches according to the proper numbering convention.
  • Prepare system riser diagrams and verify diagrams with engineers.
  • Select and schedule equipment under the oversight of engineers.
  • Manage the work plan and design process to fit with the expectations and available hours of the work plan.
  • Coordinate with other disciplines and functions as needed (i.e., MEPFP, Architectural, Structural, etc.).


Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering.
  • At least two years of experience with Revit content and family creation and modifications.
  • Proficient with Revit and AutoCAD. Experience setting up views, view templates, sheets, and schedules in Revit for construction documents.
  • Experience with Building Information Modeling (BIM) processes and parametric design software such as Autodesk.
  • Knowledge of Bluebeam to print full sets of construction documents and perform PDF quality control reviews.
  • Ability to coordinate designs with other disciplines and functions with parametric and geometric content in 3D.
  • Familiar with NFPA-72, NFPA-101, Current CBC, IBC, IFC, IBC, BICSI, EIA, TIA, and NEC standards.
  • Excellent communication, problem solving, and analytical skills.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to multitask in support of multiple, simultaneous projects.
  • Ability to work virtually and communicate efficiently across geographies with multiple project teams.
  • Basic understanding and knowledge of the following audiovisual, data, and security structured cabling systems:
    • Audio/Visual Systems-background music, overhead paging systems, conference rooms, ballrooms, boardroom A/V and control systems
    • Security Systems-surveillance systems, physical access control systems and intrusion detection systems.
  • Understanding of the proper scope and application of SD, DD, and CD-level documents with the ability to deliver appropriate documentation with input from engineers.
  • Requires RCDD Certificate.


Preferred Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering.
  • At least ten years of experience with Autodesk.
  • Experience designing low voltage and communications systems for buildings.
  • Autodesk Revit Certified Professional.
  • Experience in telecommunications, security, and audiovisual systems design.
  • Highly proficient in AutoCAD.
  • Experience with MicroStation.
  • RCDD certification.
  • NICET Level-II or better.


Travel Requirements:

  • Occasional travel will be required, including to job sites.

  • Must be able to occasionally move and lift equipment and materials up to twenty-five (25) pounds.
  • May require bending and reaching in areas from floor level to six (6) feet high.
  • Requires pushing and pulling file cabinet drawers.
  • Requires the ability to distinguish letters or symbols as well as hand/eye coordination.
  • Work is often performed in an office environment and at a desk or a similar arrangement where the noise level is usually low.
  • Work may also be performed at a variety of job sites under a variety of conditions including limited time spent outdoors.
