The Leidos Energy, Infrastructure, and Automation operation helps solve utilities' complex challenges through our full life-cycle, performance-based solutions. Our services include engineering, planning, project management, construction management, and commissioning for electric power substations and transmission and distribution lines; protection and controls design; and electrification programs. Utilities consistently come to Leidos for reliable power expertise, as reflected through our work with more than 75 investor-owned utilities and more than 100 municipals/cooperatives across the country as well as a growing number of private developers.

We are in search of a Senior Microgrid Control and Automation Engineer to join our diverse and fast-paced organization. As a core team member, you will be interacting with other electric utility disciplines, playing a valuable part in leading and designing microgrid and renewable energy projects.
This opportunity can be FULLY REMOTE for the ideal candidate or HYBRID (two to four days per week in Framingham, MA office). Must be willing to travel to the office or client sites as needed.
What you'll be doing:
  • Utilize familiarity with microgrids' control systems and automation technologies, such as supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems, energy management systems (EMS), Intelligent Electronic Devices (IEDs), Human Machine Interfaces (HMIs), Remote Terminal Units (RTUs).
  • Apply understanding of microgrid concepts, including islanding operation, grid-connected operation, energy management, control strategies, and power flow management within a microgrid system.
  • Participate in Functional Acceptance Testing (FAT) and Site Acceptance Test (SAT).
  • Perform Hardware in the Loop (HIL) testing.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of various renewable energy technologies such as solar photovoltaic (PV) systems, wind turbines, batteries, and other distributed energy resources (DERs).
  • Use experience with power electronics and their application in renewable energy systems and microgrids, including inverters, converters, and other power electronic devices to interface and control DERs.
  • Perform planning and engineering in support of telecommunication systems and telecommunication projects.
  • Establish project schedules and budgets.
  • Develop drawings and specifications for utility telecommunication system projects.
  • Coordinate with other internal engineering departments, external contractors, and utility construction crews.
  • Travel to project sites to collect information on existing conditions.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in CAD software for electrical system design, simulation tools for modeling and analysis, and programming languages commonly used in microgrid control systems.
  • Apply knowledge of commonly utilized communication protocols (DNP, SEL, MMS, Modbus, etc.).
  • Utilize experience with Protection & Control design concepts, including one-lines, three-lines, schematics, wiring, etc.
  • Use experience with commonly utilized system modeling software programs (ASPEN, CAPE, CYME, ETAP, SKM, etc.).
  • Employ experience with DNP3, Modbus, IEC 61131 Programming, AcSELerator RTAC, SEL 5030 Quickset, GE Cimplicity, and Protocol Test Software preferred.

What does Leidos need from me?
  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering (BSEE) with four to eight plus years of related microgrid experience.
  • Strong knowledge of microgrid and renewable energies.
  • Protection and control of power system experience.
  • Capability to learn a variety of client software packages and databases.
  • Proficient in Microsoft 365 (Work, Excel, PowerPoint, Project, Outlook).
  • Must be comfortable in both a field and office setting.
  • Ability to support field work occasionally in rough terrain in order to access remote project locations.
  • Valid US driver license and able to lift 20 pounds.

Favorable if you have:
  • Fundamentals of Engineering certification.
  • Master's degree in a related field.
