Inside the Role:
Daimler Truck North America is the market leader and thrives as the voice of the trucking industry. In the Detroit Powertrain Test Center, we are driving the powertrain R&D validation for our global Daimler Truck brand including conventional diesel and alternative powertrain components. In this position, you will be responsible for facilitating metrology from a technical perspective focusing on prototype powertrain components. The Metrology Engineer is focused on the science of measurements and responsible designing, scripting, setting up, executing and problem-solving high precision measurements. Systematic software scripts need to be designed and implemented to precisely measure a product dimension either verifying the design specifications or aging wear characteristics. You will be responsible for leading continuous improvement of metrology systems, tools, and processes to ensure quality assurance meets the stringent tolerances and quality standards. This will require applying mechanical, electrical and systems engineering principles to develop products, components, and systems. We are looking for a person who is solution-orientated and has excellent organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills.

This role assists in the development and implementation of engineering test methodologies, fixtures, and procedures using advanced, highly specialized equipment. It also supports the creation of systematic and mechanical metrology methods that ensure exceptional precision, repeatability, and reproducibility across all testing and measurement activities.
Measurement Systems & Data Analysis
The position is responsible for analyzing complex measurement data, preparing clear and actionable reports, and communicating results to cross-functional teams. Application of GD&T and analytical judgment, the role will troubleshoot intricate measurement-related issues. A key focus is driving continuous improvement initiatives that enhance measurement accuracy, reduce cycle times, and minimize uncertainty.
Equipment Programming, Calibration & Maintenance
This role will program and optimization the various measurement equipment, applying best-practice programming standards to ensure consistent performance. It includes evaluating, selecting, calibrating, and maintaining equipment to uphold reliability, accuracy, and compliance with manufacturing and industry requirements.
Cross-Functional Collaboration & Technical Leadership
The position works closely with product engineering, quality, and manufacturing teams to define, validate, and support measurement requirements throughout the product lifecycle. Helping aid technical direction to assigned technicians, ensuring alignment with union contractual agreements and fostering a high-performance, collaborative work environment.
Standards, Procedures & Operational Excellence
This role develops, implements, and maintains standard work instructions and best practices that promote consistency and operational efficiency. It ensures strict adherence to safety procedures and 5S principles, supporting a safe, organized, and high-quality workplace.
Technology Strategy & Onsite Validation Support
The position will help aid researching, evaluating new technologies, equipment, and systems that strengthen the test center's capabilities and long-term performance. It also provides onsite support for validation activities.
Knowledge You Should Bring
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing, Computer Science Engineering, or related fields
  • Minimum 3 years of relevant industry experience required.
  • Basic knowledge in metrology, quality engineering, or manufacturing experience with component design principles, statistical analysis, process control, and functions such as GD&T, SPC, and 3D modeling.
  • Intermediate software knowledge in CAD (e.g., Siemens NX, or AutoCAD) and ability to interpret engineering drawings and specifications.
  • Design tolerances, and quality assurance required
  • Technical product knowledge in axles, electric axles, diesel engines, and transmissions.
  • Strong mathematical, mechanical and systematic aptitude to be able to work across various engineering disciplines. Must have collaboration and communication skill sets.
  • Must have technical and digital skillset and advance PC skills including MS Office and database tools.
  • Knowledgeable with calibration standards and traceability requirements.
  • Experience analyzing test results, identifying and solving the root cause of complex problems, writing technical reports and written procedures.
  • Self-motivated and driven analytical proactive approach to identifying and solving challenges.

Exceptional Candidates Might Have
  • Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing, Computer Science Engineering, or related fields (ABET Accredited University).
  • 3+ years of directly applicable experience.
  • Advance knowledge of measurement systems (e.g.: Leitz w/Quidos, Mahr MMQ-400, VD280 and Mahr Win), CMM, vision systems, and other advanced metrology tools.
  • Demonstrable knowledge of automotive industry test technologies and capabilities.
  • Experience in advance script writing with Visual Basic & Visual C++
  • Expertise quality standards such as ISO 9001, ISO/TS 16949, AS9100, knowledge of ISO 9001, IATF 16949, or similar quality standards and relevant industry specifications.
  • Experience with CMM Programming
