Job description

Job Summary:
Mercury Insurance is a recognized company known for its achievements and positive work culture. The Senior Test Engineer will lead testing efforts on complex software projects, mentor junior engineers, and ensure software quality through comprehensive testing strategies and automation.
Responsibilities:
• Develop Test Plans and Strategies: With the goal of minimizing production defects, lead the creation and execution of test plans and strategies, ensuring they are comprehensive, well-documented, and aligned with project goals. Assess and estimate time, resources, and effort required for testing activities, supporting project timelines and deliverables. Incorporate an automation-first approach to testing to maximize coverage and efficiency for medium sized features.
• Design and Execute Test Cases: Design and create reproducible complex cross-functional test cases for a variety of test types, ensuring that all software requirements are covered comprehensively. Take ownership of end-to-end testing for complex projects and ensure effective execution.
• Perform Manual and Automated Testing: With the goal of minimizing production defects, lead both manual and automated testing efforts for multiple small features, ensuring high-quality coverage for all phases of testing. Collaborate with the team to continually improve automated testing practices and coverage.
• Documentations for Process and Bug Report: Take ownership of create complex test cases test results and bug reports with detailed analysis. Provide easy to follow test cases, concise reproducible steps in bug report and keep all report and other documentation up to date for large sized features to ensure overall quality. Communicate and enforce best practices and ensure overall quality
• Cross-Functional Collaboration and Communication: Collaborate cross-functionally with engineers, product managers, and business stakeholders to ensure complex requirement's clarity including upstream and downstream functional areas, accountable for all features meet quality standards and ensure software meets requirements across the product. Facilitate and guide UAT activities.
• Continuous Improvement: Implement and Drive Continuous Improvement Practices. Lead small process improvements initiatives and quality assurance practices in their medium-sized functional area. Use data and metrics to identify inefficiencies and propose solutions to enhance the overall testing process and software quality.
• Continuous Learning: Actively research and evaluate new testing tools, techniques, and methodologies. Recommend and help integrate innovative solutions that will improve testing effectiveness. Mentor junior engineers in the adoption of new tools.
• Mentor TE Team Members on Product knowledge: Mentor and coach junior and mid-level test engineers, helping them develop their skills and improve testing practices. Encourage knowledge-sharing and foster a collaborative team environment.
• Critical Thinking and Problem-Solving Skills: Act as the primary problem-solver for testing roadblocks, taking proactive action to resolve issues that may impact test schedules or quality. Escalate when necessary but take ownership of leading solutions with related teams.
• Test Strategy Review: Lead the review and improvement of test strategies. Ensure that testing approaches align with both project goals and technical constraints and propose adjustments where necessary to ensure complete test coverage and efficiency.
• Test Case Review: Review test cases for completeness and accuracy, ensuring alignment with project requirements and use cases for smaller teams. Provide constructive feedback on test case design, coverage, and execution to improve test effectiveness.
• Monitor and Analyze Testing Metrics: Continuously track, analyze, and interpret testing metrics to assess effectiveness and quality. Enhance testing processes, test coverage, and defect management based on the given direction.
• Drive and Develop Test Engineering Strategies and Policies: Create and implement test strategies, policies, and standards. Contribute and follow ideas for improving testing processes, including the adoption of new tools and techniques. Ensure team adherence to established quality assurance practices.
• Test Automation Effectiveness and Coverage - Collaborate with SET team to define prioritize automation, ensuring the team is leveraging automation to maximize testing efficiency. Improving automation coverage.
Qualifications:
Required:
• Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information Systems or other related fields Or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• 5+ yrs industry experience, independently working on S/M projects, mentoring Jr testing engineers.
• Experienced with Critical Thinking and Problem-Solving Skills: Able to handle complex troubleshooting and problem resolution across multiple systems. Utilizes strong analytical skills to identify root causes and propose effective solutions. Takes initiative to resolve cross-functional issues.
• Ability to analyze complex product requirements and works independently to define the testing approach. Partners with stakeholders to ensure all aspects of the requirements are covered by testing, addressing ambiguities and gaps.
• Ability to write and maintain automated test scripts using tools like Selenium, TestNG, or similar.
• Strong experience with API testing, including using tools like Postman or SoapUI for validating functionality and performance.
• Ability to demonstrate excellent verbal and written communication skills as well as on executing task-specific collaboration, conveying precise technical details, responding to immediate issues, and ensure clarity in resolving task-level challenges.
• Experienced with leading adaptation to changing requirements, code designs and implementation changes, new technologies, methods to solve problems, shift priorities, workstyle and responsibilities.
• Ability to manage large, complex testing projects with multiple dependencies. Coordinates priorities effectively across teams and ensures deadlines are consistently met, even in high-pressure environments.
• Strong understanding of domain-specific knowledge and business requirements, influencing the direction of testing to ensure it aligns with strategic goals and provides tangible value to the organization.
• Able to demonstrate advanced knowledge of a wide range of testing types, including complex test scenarios and automation techniques. Leads test strategy decisions and implements best practices across multiple testing methodologies.
• Able to demonstrate exceptional attention to detail, consistently identifying subtle issues and potential improvements that may affect the product quality or user experience.
• Extensive experience with defect tracking tools like JIRA, Confluence, including driving the resolution process and escalating critical defects.
Preferred:
• 5 or more years of experience with Java or Python
• 5 or more years of experience with automation testing
• 5 or more years of experience with API testing
• 3 or more years of experience with web testing along with familiarity with mobile testing
