Job description

At Liberis, our mission is to empower small and medium-sized businesses by removing finance as a friction to growth, delivering contextual, embedded financial solutions to support merchants at every stage of their business lifecycle.

The team

We are the Risk team responsible for managing the credit risk of Liberis' portfolios, which include designing effective new strategies, managing the credit quality of our products across geographies, and providing specialist credit risk advice to the business.

The Risk team is primarily based in London with colleagues in Atlanta, US and Stockholm, Sweden too and covers Risk Analytics, Decision Science and Underwriting. Our mission is to grow Liberis profitably to become the leading embedded business finance provider and we are looking for an Underwriter to join us on this journey.

 Who are you?

You're someone who's detail-oriented, energised by challenge and motivated by purpose. You thrive in an environment where you can support a team, grow through hands-on experience, and be part of something with purpose - helping small businesses thrive. Most importantly, you're passionate about making a real impact through finance that serves communities, not just balance sheets.

This is an exciting time to join Liberis in Atlanta. We're scaling fast in the North American market, bringing our embedded finance solutions to more partners and small businesses than ever before.

Reporting to the Senior Underwriting Manager in Atlanta, you'll help shape the way we assess and manage risk as we expand, bringing a fresh problem-solving perspective to the table and strengthening the foundations of our US operation.

What you'll be doing

As an Underwriter, you'll be supporting the Underwriting team in their day-to-day activities, exercising the fundamentals of underwriting while helping ensure we deliver fast, fair, and responsible finance to small businesses.

  • Assisting in the review and processing of new and repeat funding applications
  • Gathering and preparing financial and business information for assessment
  • Liaising directly with customers to request additional information or clarify data
  • Ensuring application data is complete, accurate, and in line with internal policies
  • Helping maintain underwriting records and documentation
  • Learning how to evaluate risk, underwrite deals, and make balanced decisions over time
  • Supporting process improvements by sharing observations and suggestions
  • Ad-hoc analytical work to support decision-making stakeholders

What we think you'll need

The best Underwriters can think strategically with the limited amount of information that is available when making a decision. Our team currently consists of several bright and talented individuals, and our next hire will further strengthen the team by contributing not only to underwriting deals but also to broader risk analysis capabilities.

  • 2-4 years of experience in underwriting, ideally in small-business finance or a similar lending environment
  • Confidence making independent decisions and explaining them clearly to colleagues and customers
  • Sharp attention to detail with the ability to stay organized while turning complex data into clear insights
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Comfort working in a fast-growing, evolving business where priorities can shift quickly
  • (Preferred) Some degree of analytical training, with exposure to SQL and Excel

What happens next?

Think this sounds like the right next move for you? Or if you're not completely confident that you fit our exact criteria, apply anyway and we can arrange a call to see if the role is fit for you. Humility is a wonderful thing, and we are interested in hearing about what you can add to Liberis!

Our hybrid approach

Working together in person helps us move faster, collaborate better, and build a great Liberis culture. Our hybrid working policy requires team members to be in the office at least 3 days a week, but ideally 4 days. At Liberis, we embrace flexibility as a core part of our culture, while also valuing the importance of the time our teams spend together in the office.
