What is merchandising management?

Merchandising management is the process of planning, buying, displaying, and selling products in a way that maximizes sales and profitability for a retail business. It involves analyzing consumer trends, selecting merchandise, managing inventory, and optimizing product placement in stores or online. Merchandising managers work closely with suppliers, marketing teams, and store staff to ensure that the right products are available at the right time, in the right quantities, and at competitive prices. Their goal is to enhance the shopping experience and drive business growth.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a merchandising manager?

To thrive as a Merchandising Manager, you need a strong background in retail operations, product selection, inventory planning, and typically a degree in business, marketing, or a related field. Proficiency with merchandising software, inventory management systems, and data analysis tools is essential. These abilities ensure optimal product assortment, increased sales, and organizational profitability in a competitive retail environment.

How does a merchandising manager typically collaborate with other departments to execute successful product launches?

Merchandising Managers work closely with buying, marketing, and supply chain teams to ensure cohesive product launches. They coordinate with buyers to select appropriate assortments, partner with marketing to craft effective promotional strategies, and liaise with supply chain to guarantee product availability. This cross-functional teamwork helps align product presentation with consumer demand and business goals, making collaboration a daily part of the role.

Job description

2Modern is seeking a strategic Brand Merchandising Manager to lead the growth and performance of a portfolio of luxury home furnishings brands. Serving as the primary business owner for your brands, you'll drive merchandising strategy, business planning, and cross-functional execution to deliver exceptional customer experiences and profitable growth.

You'll build trusted vendor partnerships, shape assortments, identify growth opportunities, and ensure each brand is positioned for success across 2Modern's digital marketplace. Combining strong merchandising instincts with data-driven decision-making, you'll leverage performance insights, customer behavior, and market trends to influence strategy and drive results.

This role is ideal for someone who thrives at the intersection of strategy and execution, enjoys collaborating across teams, and is passionate about building long-term partnerships with world-class design brands.

Brand Ownership & Partnership

  • Own the overall health, performance, and strategic direction of an assigned portfolio of luxury brands.
  • Build trusted relationships with vendor partners, serving as their primary business advisor and day-to-day point of contact.
  • Lead assortment planning, business reviews, promotional planning, pricing discussions, and long-term growth initiatives.
  • Identify opportunities to strengthen partnerships through thoughtful business recommendations backed by data and market insights.
  • Ensure alignment with 2Modern's merchandising standards, operational requirements, and brand presentation expectations.
  • Merchandising Strategy & Assortment Management
  • Develop curated assortments that reflect customer demand, design leadership, and business performance.
  • Drive assortment optimization through SKU productivity analysis, whitespace identification, lifecycle management, and rationalization initiatives.
  • Evaluate opportunities for expansion, contraction, and new product introductions based on profitability, customer behavior, and market trends.
  • Partner with leadership on new brand launches, seasonal merchandising strategies, and category growth initiatives.
  • Monitor competitive positioning, pricing, and industry trends to maintain 2Modern's premium market position.

Business Performance & Analytics

  • Own brand performance through ongoing analysis of sales, gross profit, margin, return rates, customer experience, inventory considerations, and operational metrics.
  • Translate data into actionable recommendations that improve profitability and customer experience.
  • Identify risks, opportunities, and emerging trends, proactively developing strategies to accelerate growth or address underperformance.
  • Support forecasting, promotional planning, and business reviews with data-driven insights.
  • Cross-Functional Leadership
  • Partner closely with Marketing, Site Merchandising, Production, Operations, Trade, Customer Experience, and Leadership to ensure flawless execution across the customer journey.
  • Ensure products launch accurately, are merchandised effectively, and meet 2Modern's standards for content quality, imagery, navigation, and discoverability.
  • Coordinate promotional initiatives, assortment updates, pricing changes, and operational improvements across departments.
  • Help create alignment around merchandising priorities through clear communication and shared business objectives.

Requirements

You're a Great Fit If You Have

  • 5+ years of merchandising or category management experience within luxury home furnishings, lighting, furniture, or premium consumer brands.
  • A strong business mindset with experience managing assortment performance, profitability, and strategic growth initiatives.
  • Strong analytical skills and confidence using data to influence merchandising decisions.
  • Experience building collaborative vendor relationships while balancing brand needs with business objectives.
  • Outstanding organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple complex initiatives simultaneously.
  • A refined design sensibility and strong merchandising eye, paired with a disciplined, customer-first approach to assortment planning.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to influence cross-functional teams and external partners.
  • Advanced proficiency in Excel or Google Sheets; familiarity with Shopify and modern eCommerce merchandising platforms is preferred.
