Job Overview
The Macy's 8-week Summer Internship Program in Buying provides exposure to consumer products, business strategies, and the latest retail trends across Macy's brand offerings. As a Buying Intern, you will be part of the team directly responsible for the merchandise assortment across all Macy's shopping channels, including both stores and e-commerce. The Buying team drives sales, margin, inventory productivity, and business growth by analyzing customer demand, developing assortment strategies, selecting products, and optimizing inventory. Through the use of product performance data and market trends, Buyers make recommendations on assortment, advertising, and featured products to maximize sales, profitability, and the overall customer experience in an ever-evolving retail environment.
Macy's summer internship program provides interns with a hands-on and in-depth understanding of a core business function in retail. Interns have opportunities to directly impact the business as a key part of a team and by sharing new ideas. Macy's interns experience everything our culture has to offer through exposure to senior leaders and networking opportunities. The internship program may lead to an opportunity to work full-time with Macy's in our early careers program after graduation. This internship program will be held in Macy's New York, New York Corporate offices.
What You Will Do
  • Receive professional development through a combination of hands-on learning and collaborative projects
  • Build relationships with other interns, business leaders, and team colleagues
  • Attend and participate in weekly business meetings to review and recap sales performance
  • Analyze business performance metrics and make recommendations to maximize the business based on trends
  • Collaborate with team to develop assortment strategy for key items and fashion.
  • Competitive shop to analyze competitor pricing and trends
  • Assist in creating purchase orders
  • Track in-season receipts and resolve shipping issues with vendors
  • Regular, dependable attendance & punctuality

Qualifications and Competencies
  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Junior standing (rising senior at the time of the internship) pursuing a bachelor's degree with a strong academic record.
  • Minimum 3.0 GPA preferred.
  • All majors will be considered for this opportunity.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including storytelling, presentation, relationship-building, and influencing skills.
  • Ability to read, write, and interpret instructional documents such as reports and procedure manuals.
  • Strong retail math, analytical, and problem-solving skills with the ability to analyze sales, gross margin, inventory productivity, sell-through, and other key retail performance metrics; identify trends; and translate data into actionable business recommendations.
  • Advanced Excel skills, including Pivot Tables, VLOOKUP/XLOOKUP, formulas, and data analysis techniques; proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, and PowerPoint).
  • Basic understanding of financial performance metrics, profitability concepts, statistical analysis, and assortment planning.
  • Ability to independently organize and prioritize multiple projects, meet deadlines, and thrive in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to collaborate cross-functionally with internal and external business partners while managing multiple priorities.
  • Ability to run, interpret, and analyze reports using assigned systems and tools.
  • Demonstrated leadership, teamwork, and relationship management skills.
  • Ability to streamline processes, identify opportunities for improvement, and drive business results.
  • Exhibits high standards, accountability, attention to detail, and a commitment to accuracy.
  • High aptitude with the ability to process information quickly and develop solutions to business challenges.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule based on department and company needs.
