Job description

Maverick Payments is seeking motivated and detail-oriented UnderwritingIntern with a proven focus on the finance industry to collaborate in supporting data-driven decision-making and innovation across the organization. This internship offers hands-on experience working with real business data in partnership with business professionals applying advanced analytics in the payments space.
As a Maverick Payments Intern, you will work on real-world projects with business leaders from across the organization and gain practical experience using machine learning and predictive modeling to solve finance related business problems. Interns will engage directly and collaboratively with other technical experts and line-of-business SMEs to analyze key business processes and data, collaboratively identify opportunities for optimization, develop actionable solutions and drive process change.
Day-to-Day Responsibilities:
  • Conduct background checks on prospective and existing reseller partners using designated screening tools and verification platforms.
  • Perform data entry and maintain accurate records throughout the underwriting review process.
  • Review identity verification documents (e.g., government-issued IDs, SSN verification) and business verification documents (e.g., business licenses, articles of incorporation, EIN documentation) for completeness and consistency.
  • Flag discrepancies, missing documentation, or potential concerns for escalation to department leadership.
  • Follow established underwriting procedures and checklists to ensure consistent and compliant partner due diligence reviews.
  • Partner with cross-functional teams (e.g., Risk, Business Development, Operations, Compliance) to support a coordinated, end-to-end underwriting and partner onboarding workflow.
  • Support the administrative functions of the underwriting team, including file organization, process documentation, and workflow tracking.
  • Assist with ad hoc reporting and special projects as assigned by underwriting leadership.
  • Other duties as assigned.

  • Contribute to the resolution process of client risk and underwriting application
  • Focus areas may include application processing, underwriting, onboarding, and risk monitoring among others

Training & Onboarding:
  • Risk & Underwriting process training

  • Initial 2-week discovery and learning phase focused on understanding business processes and identifying opportunities
Ideal Candidate Profile:
  • Pursuing a degree in Business Analytics, Data Science, Finance, Computer Science, or a related field
  • Interest and previous professional engagement in finance, fintech or payments.
  • Proven to have exceptional communication, interpersonal, listening, presentation, influence, collaboration, team and change management skills
  • Exceptionally strong analytical, innovative and problem-solving skills
  • Experience working across diverse, cross-functional teams to influence decisions and drive positive business results
  • Exposure to business clients, key accounts or core business partners
  • Proficiency in Excel; exposure to SQL, Python, or BI tools (Power BI, Tableau) preferred.
  • Exposure to applied machine learning, AI Agents (Make, n8n, Lovable)
This internship reports onsite to our offices in Calabasas, CA.
Pay Range: $22-27/hr
