Employment Status:Full timeShift:Day/Evening (United States of America)Facility:1906 Belleview Ave SE - RoanokeRequisition Number:R161846 Pharmacy Technician TRAINEE (Carilion Clinic Pharmacy - Inpatient and Retail) (Open Date: 08/06/2026) How You'll Help Transform Healthcare:Carilion Clinic is a six-hospital health system located in beautiful Southwest Virginia. Carilion's flagship hospital, Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital, is a 763-bed academic medical center, level I trauma center, tertiary/quaternary referral center, and Certified Primary Stroke center that has consistently been ranked by US News as a Best Hospital in the state of Virginia. It is also affiliated with the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine and has numerous post-graduate training programs, including multiple medical and surgical residencies and fellowships.
The Pharmacy Technician in Training supports pharmacists and lead technicians in delivering safe, high-quality pharmaceutical care. This entry-level role offers hands-on experience in medication distribution, sterile and non-sterile compounding, inventory management, and administrative support.
Once accepted, Technicians in Training must register with the Board of Pharmacy and may perform most pharmacy technician functions under direct supervision.

Training Program Overview

This ASHP-accredited Technician Training Program is a full-time, 16-week program that combines:

  • Online, computer-based learning modules

  • In-person simulations

  • Hands-on experiential training across multiple pharmacy settings

Trainees are prepared to work in a variety of pharmacy roles and are required to work every third weekend during the program.

Program Start Dates

Classes begin approximately every 8-12 weeks. This specific requisition/application is for the November 2, 2026 cohort. Application reviews, interviews and offers are made on a first-come, first-served basis. If interested, please apply.

Schedule Requirements

This program requires schedule flexibility due to rotating training experiences. 8-hour shifts may include:

  • Morning shifts starting between 7:00 a.m. and 9:30 a.m.

  • Evening shifts ending no later than 7:45 p.m.

  • Flexibility with scheduling is essential throughout the training period.

Training Locations

Most Carilion pharmacies serve as training sites, with the majority located at or near Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital. Limited travel to Carilion New River Valley Medical Center may be an opportunity.


The Pharmacy Technician In-Training

  • Assists in preparing and distributing medications, IV solutions, and supplies.

  • Supports sterile and non-sterile compounding per USP <797>/<795> standards.

  • Manages inventory, restocking, and documentation of medications and supplies.

  • Compiles medication histories and reconciles patient records.

  • Schedules meetings, compiles data and maintains files.

  • Communicates with internal departments and external customers.

What We Require:

Education: A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
Licensure, certification, and/or registration: Registration with state board of pharmacy as a Pharmacy Technician Trainee, when directed.
Other Minimum Qualifications:Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy, particularly when following established procedures and handling medication-related tasks. Basic computer proficiency, with the ability to learn pharmacy software systems and navigate digital tools efficiently. Must have fundamental math and problem-solving skills, including the ability to perform calculations and apply logical thinking in daily workflow and inventory-related tasks. Effective time-management skills, with the ability to prioritize work, meet deadlines, and work efficiently with minimal supervision. Clear verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to interact professionally with pharmacists, technicians, healthcare staff, and patients.

Additional Requirements for the ASHP-Accredited Technician Training Program:

Candidates must be able to:

  • Demonstrate proficiency in the English language (reading, writing, and speaking) and high school-level mathematics, verified through an assessment completed during the interview process.

  • Complete an OnDemand Video Interview response when prompted.

  • Meet eligibility requirements for registration as a Pharmacy Technician Trainee with the Virginia Board of Pharmacy and apply when directed.
