The Medical Director provides direct acute primary health care services including diagnosis, treatment, referral, and follow‑up to eligible patients. The Director assists in the development of the clinic formulary with the Chief Pharmacist and other medical professional staff, provides supervision to medical staff, and, in conjunction with the KIC Health Director, determines the appropriate range and depth of medical programs to meet AAAHC standards and federal regulations. Approximately 25% of the work schedule is devoted to administrative duties.

Directs personnel management for the KIC Medical Department, monitors staff development and training, and ensures compliance with Tribal, state, and federal personnel policies. Responsibilities include:
• Recruiting, selecting, orientating, training, coaching, counseling, and disciplining staff.
• Recommending hiring, promotions, salary increases, merit increases, transfers, discipline, and separation of all department employees to the Health Director, per Tribal policy.

Monitors and enforces internal financial policies and procedures for the Medical Department budget, coordinates with the Health Director on annual budget preparation, and administers the approved operating budget by monitoring expenditures and recommending justified changes.

Responsible for establishing and maintaining KICTHC Medical Department administrative policies, ensuring compliance with accreditation standards, state, federal, and funding laws, and developing policies as needed. The Director initiates, coordinates, and enforces program, operational, and personnel policies and procedures with ethical business practices, and attends policy committee meetings.

Inspects and evaluates physical conditions of patient care areas, recommends sanitation and efficiency improvements, develops operational, quality, and troubleshooting procedures, and arranges biomedical instrument certification, replacement, service, and repair.

Provide patient care services via ambulatory clinic, long‑term care facility, telehealth, or home visits using age‑appropriate procedures. Examine, diagnose, and treat individuals with acute conditions, determine referrals, and collaborate with administrative and clinical support. Educate patients on health conditions, therapies, and prevention, maintaining accurate medical records. Establish patient care goals, counsel patients and families, and provide emotional support.

Medical Doctor (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) from a U.S. school approved by a recognized accrediting body.

Progressive responsible administrative/management work in an ambulatory health facility; minimum five (5) years supervisory experience. Combination of related education and/or experience considered if demonstrated ability exists.

Licensed to practice medicine in any U.S. state, the District of Columbia, or Puerto Rico. For direct Tribal hire, must have a permanent, full and unrestricted State of Alaska professional Physician license. Must possess a current valid State of Alaska driver’s license acceptable to KIC’s insurance carrier.
