Reporting to the Manager of Roasting Processes and receiving directions from the Senior Certified Roasting Trainer, the Roaster Trainee will complete a certification process in green coffee and roasting. The function is to become a certified roaster within the committed time. He or she will gain a full understanding of roast curves, roasting systems software and ancillary systems relating to roasting. The Roaster Trainee is a full-time, non-exempt position.
What You Will Do:
  • Roaster trainee will learn basic operations of the GHS (Green Handling System) system and Microsoft Dynamics D365 Warehouse Management System.
  • Must complete a forklift certification.
  • Learn basic ICO marks, internal reference codes, bag weights and Peet's blends.
  • Become proficient as a sensory panelist, participate in daily production cupping and sensory tests.
  • Mentored by a Senior Certified Roasting Trainer, learn the functionality of Peet's roasting equipment, understand general maintenance and acquire the skills to roast independently.
  • Will be taught the theory of roasting and expected to apply it to daily roasts.
  • Learn Peet's quality and food safety control system.
  • Manage inventory with mobile device.
  • Other responsibilities as assigned by the manager of roasting.

Outline of Trainee Program:
  • After initial training, the Roaster Trainee will be required to roast batches consistently meeting documented quality standards over a period of 12 months

  • Continual roasting of high demand full batch size coffees will be part of the certification process to achieve the status of a full Level 1 Roaster.
  • Roaster trainee will be expected to successfully pass a written and oral examination given onsite to achieve Level 1 Roaster status within 12 months.

  • Must be able to master a skill and execute it consistently daily.
  • Computer savvy with experience using multiple forms of Microsoft.
  • Acute sensory skills.
  • Capacity to learn and apply Peet's standard operating procedures.
  • Capable of working safely harmoniously with a wide variety of people.
  • Must be able to maintain an elevated level of professionalism both on and off the job as a direct representative of Peet's Coffee.
  • Ability to lift to 45 pounds regularly.
  • Must be willing to work overtime when required.
  • Strong time management.
  • Ability to multitask.
