What is a mechanical engineering technologist?

Mechanical Engineering Technologists are professionals who apply engineering principles and technical skills to assist in the design, development, testing, and manufacturing of mechanical devices and systems. They often work alongside engineers to implement projects, solve technical problems, and ensure product quality. Their work can range from developing prototypes and overseeing manufacturing processes to maintaining equipment and ensuring safety standards are met. Mechanical Engineering Technologists play a crucial role in bridging the gap between engineering theory and practical application in industries such as manufacturing, automotive, and energy.

What does a mechanical engineering technologist do?

A mechanical engineering technologist works with mechanical engineers to design and test manufacturing projects. People in this specialty are responsible for helping with the design and layout of equipment and the transmission of energy. Additional job duties for a mechanical engineering technologist may include testing the process and running statistical models and analysis to find ways to lower production costs.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a mechanical engineering technologist?

To thrive as a Mechanical Engineering Technologist, you need a solid understanding of mechanical systems, mathematics, and drafting principles, usually backed by a diploma or degree in mechanical engineering technology. Familiarity with CAD software, 3D modeling tools, and industry standards such as ASME is typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective teamwork skills set top performers apart. These competencies ensure accurate technical support, efficient project execution, and successful collaboration within engineering teams.

How do mechanical engineering technologists typically collaborate with engineers and other team members on project development?

Mechanical Engineering Technologists often work closely with engineers, drafters, and manufacturing teams throughout the project lifecycle. They assist in translating engineering designs into practical, manufacturable components by creating prototypes, running tests, and troubleshooting issues. Regular communication and teamwork are essential, as technologists provide feedback to engineers, suggest design improvements, and help ensure that projects meet safety and quality standards. This collaborative environment allows technologists to build versatile skills and gain exposure to different project phases.

What is the difference between Mechanical Engineering Technologist vs Mechanical Engineer?

AspectMechanical Engineering TechnologistMechanical Engineer
CredentialsDiploma or advanced diploma in mechanical technologyBachelor's degree in mechanical engineering
Work EnvironmentDesign, testing, and manufacturing support in labs or workshopsDesign, analysis, and project management in offices or industrial sites
Employer & Industry UsageUsed by manufacturing, construction, and technical firmsUsed across engineering consulting, manufacturing, and R&D sectors

Mechanical Engineering Technologists typically hold diplomas and focus on applying engineering principles in practical settings, while Mechanical Engineers have degrees and are involved in designing and analyzing systems. Both roles collaborate closely but differ in education level and scope of responsibilities.

Creating or modifying technical drawings using SolidWorks.
Working closely with R&D, engineering and laboratory teams to develop solutions based on project requirements.
Performing precise hands-on work in different optical and electronic laboratory environments.
Following all safety procedures and requirements related to machine tool operation.
Working Conditions :
Permanent position in a technology-driven R&D environment.
Work focused primarily on precision, quality and tooling development, rather than high-volume production.
Multidisciplinary environment combining mechanical, optical and electronic applications.
Opportunity to leverage your machining expertise across a variety of technical projects.
Located in Kirkland, Montreal.

Your profile

Technical or university-level training in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Mechanics, Machining or a related field.
Hands-on experience as a Machinist, particularly with manual machine tools.
Strong experience operating a manual lathe and milling machine.
CNC machining experience is an asset.
Ability to read and interpret technical drawings.
Experience using SolidWorks for technical drawings or design is a strong asset.
Highly detail-oriented, precise and comfortable performing hands-on precision work.
Strong problem-solving skills, autonomy and attention to quality.
Comfortable working in an R&D environment without high-volume production pressure.
Experienced machinists, including those later in their careers who are looking to bring their expertise into an R&D environment, are also encouraged to apply.
Interested?
Are you an experienced machinist looking to apply your expertise in an R&D environment, where precision and quality matter more than production speed?
I would be happy to speak with you about this opportunity.
