What is mechanical engineering technology?

Mechanical Engineering Technology (MET) is a field focused on applying engineering principles and technical skills to design, develop, test, and manufacture mechanical devices and systems. Professionals in MET often work with tools, machines, and production processes to bridge the gap between theoretical engineering and practical application. They typically work alongside engineers to implement solutions, improve manufacturing processes, and ensure product quality. MET graduates are employed in industries such as automotive, aerospace, energy, and manufacturing, where their hands-on expertise is highly valued.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a mechanical engineering technologist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Mechanical Engineering Technologist, you need a solid understanding of engineering principles, applied mathematics, and mechanical systems, typically supported by an associate’s or bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering technology. Proficiency with CAD software (such as AutoCAD or SolidWorks), experience with manufacturing processes, and familiarity with industry standards are commonly required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective teamwork and communication abilities distinguish top performers in this role. These skills ensure the accurate design, analysis, and implementation of mechanical solutions that meet industry needs and safety standards.

What are some common challenges mechanical engineering technologists face when working on multidisciplinary teams?

Mechanical Engineering Technologists often collaborate with professionals from electrical, software, and manufacturing backgrounds. A frequent challenge is ensuring effective communication across disciplines, as each field may use different technical terminology and design approaches. Successfully navigating these differences requires adaptability, strong teamwork skills, and a willingness to learn about adjacent fields. Overcoming these challenges leads to more efficient project development and improved end products.

What is the difference between Mechanical Engineering Technology vs Mechanical Design Engineer?

AspectMechanical Engineering TechnologyMechanical Design Engineer
EducationAssociate's or Bachelor's in Mechanical Engineering TechnologyBachelor's or Master's in Mechanical Engineering
CertificationsOptional certifications like Certified Engineering Technician (CET)Professional Engineer (PE) license often required
Work EnvironmentManufacturing, testing labs, technical supportDesign offices, R&D, product development
Job FocusApplying engineering principles to support manufacturing and testingCreating and analyzing mechanical designs and prototypes

Mechanical Engineering Technicians primarily support manufacturing and testing processes, focusing on applying engineering principles practically. Mechanical Design Engineers concentrate on designing and developing mechanical systems and products. While both roles require a strong understanding of mechanical concepts, their work environments and responsibilities differ significantly.

What can you do with a mechanical engineering technology degree?

A mechanical engineering technology degree prepares graduates for roles such as mechanical technician, manufacturing engineer, design drafter, or maintenance supervisor. These positions involve working with CAD software, conducting testing, and supporting engineering projects in manufacturing, product development, or maintenance environments.

What does a mechanical engineering technology do?

A mechanical engineering technologist applies engineering principles to design, develop, test, and manufacture mechanical devices and systems. They often work with CAD software, perform technical calculations, and assist engineers in project implementation within manufacturing, automotive, or aerospace industries.

What jobs can I get with mechanical engineering technology?

Mechanical engineering technology graduates can work as mechanical technicians, manufacturing engineers, design engineers, quality control specialists, or maintenance supervisors. These roles often involve using CAD software, conducting testing, and applying engineering principles in manufacturing, product development, or maintenance environments.

Job description

Hello, I’m Anthony Chacon, Recruitment Advisor at FED ManuTech, specializing in engineering, technical and manufacturing positions.
I am currently recruiting for a Mechanical Engineering Technician to join a technology-driven company specializing in solutions for the optics and electronics sectors, located in Kirkland.

Mission

Your Role
In this role, you will work in an R&D environment, where your machining expertise and attention to detail will be used to develop high-precision tools, components and equipment.
Your responsibilities will include:
Operating manual machine tools, including manual lathes and milling machines.
Operating CNC equipment as required by projects.
Manufacturing and modifying high-precision components and tooling for optical and production applications.
Performing hands-on assembly, fitting and machining work.
Reading and interpreting technical drawings.
Creating or modifying technical drawings using SolidWorks.
Working closely with R&D, engineering and laboratory teams to develop solutions based on project requirements.
Performing precise hands-on work in different optical and electronic laboratory environments.
Following all safety procedures and requirements related to machine tool operation.
Working Conditions :
Permanent position in a technology-driven R&D environment.
Work focused primarily on precision, quality and tooling development, rather than high-volume production.
Multidisciplinary environment combining mechanical, optical and electronic applications.
Opportunity to leverage your machining expertise across a variety of technical projects.
Located in Kirkland, Montreal.

Your profile

Technical or university-level training in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Mechanics, Machining or a related field.
Hands-on experience as a Machinist, particularly with manual machine tools.
Strong experience operating a manual lathe and milling machine.
CNC machining experience is an asset.
Ability to read and interpret technical drawings.
Experience using SolidWorks for technical drawings or design is a strong asset.
Highly detail-oriented, precise and comfortable performing hands-on precision work.
Strong problem-solving skills, autonomy and attention to quality.
Comfortable working in an R&D environment without high-volume production pressure.
Experienced machinists, including those later in their careers who are looking to bring their expertise into an R&D environment, are also encouraged to apply.
Interested?
Are you an experienced machinist looking to apply your expertise in an R&D environment, where precision and quality matter more than production speed?
I would be happy to speak with you about this opportunity.
