Position Description & Details
Are you passionate about health, movement, and helping students build rewarding careers in wellness and human performance? Bismarck State College is seeking an engaging and student-focused Assistant Professor of Exercise Science to join our team. This role is ideal for an educator who enjoys blending science, hands-on learning, and mentorship to support student success.
What You'll Do
Responsibilities include supporting student success through instruction in exercise science courses, including human movement, fitness, health, physiology, biomechanics, and exercise programming. The successful candidate will help prepare students for careers in healthcare, fitness, rehabilitation, coaching, and wellness industries.
Additional responsibilities include:
  • Delivering high-quality classroom and laboratory instruction in exercise science courses.
  • Developing and maintaining relevant, industry-aligned curriculum.
  • Mentoring and advising students to support academic and career success.
  • Assessing student learning outcomes and submitting assessments and grades by established deadlines.
  • Collaborating with colleagues, community partners, and industry professionals.
  • Supervising internships and experiential learning opportunities.
  • Maintaining laboratory equipment and supporting safe, effective learning environments.
  • Supporting accreditation activities, recruitment, retention, and departmental record keeping.
  • Participating in institutional service through committee work and campus engagement.
  • Engaging in scholarly research, professional development, and community outreach.
  • Performing other duties as assigned by the Assistant Dean and Academic Division Dean.

What We're Looking For
We're looking for a collaborative and innovative educator with strong communication skills, a passion for student success, and a commitment to academic excellence. Industry experience in exercise science, fitness, rehabilitation, healthcare, coaching, or wellness-related fields is highly valued.
STARTING DATE: August 17, 2026
REQUIREMENT QUALIFICATIONS
  • Master's degree in exercise science or a master's degree with at least 15 graduate credits in exercise science or a combination of education and equivalent experiences to be reviewed with application.
  • Documented successful experience teaching exercise science courses.
  • Documented successful experience with recruiting collegiate students.
  • Documented successful collegiate teaching experience.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with diverse groups and ability to work as a team member.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to articulate and support the polytechnic philosophy with a strong commitment to teaching and learning in a polytechnic setting.
  • Good working knowledge of computer software programs (i.e., Microsoft Office, email & electronic calendar - Outlook).
  • Creative in using a variety of teaching resources, media, and instructional technologies.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Earned doctorate (PhD).
  • Experience with distance delivery of courses.
  • Experience with curriculum development.
  • Experience with hands-on teaching methods.

BENEFITS
Nine-month full-time tenure track exempt position. Minimum starting salary $47,100-$58,874 (masters required), based on experience and education.
