Manufacturing Representative information

What is a manufacturing representative?

Manufacturing Representatives, also known as manufacturers' reps or sales representatives, are professionals who act as intermediaries between manufacturing companies and their customers. They promote and sell a manufacturer's products to wholesalers, retailers, and other businesses, usually within a specific territory. These representatives often work on commission and may represent multiple manufacturers at once, helping businesses find the right products while providing valuable market feedback to manufacturers.

How does a manufacturing representative typically interact with production and sales teams to meet client needs?

A Manufacturing Representative acts as a vital link between manufacturers and clients, frequently collaborating with both production and sales teams. They communicate client specifications and feedback to the production team to ensure that products meet quality and delivery expectations. At the same time, they work closely with sales teams to understand market demands and provide technical support during the sales process. This collaborative environment helps ensure that customer requirements are met efficiently and any issues are resolved quickly, making strong interpersonal and communication skills essential for success in the role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a manufacturing representative, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Manufacturing Representative, you need strong sales acumen, product knowledge, and typically a background in business or engineering. Familiarity with CRM software, ERP systems, and industry certifications like Certified Professional Manufacturer's Representative (CPMR) are commonly important. Excellent communication, negotiation, and relationship-building skills help you effectively connect with clients and manage accounts. These competencies are crucial for driving sales growth, ensuring customer satisfaction, and maintaining successful manufacturer-client partnerships.

The main difference is that Manufacturing Representatives focus on selling products on behalf of manufacturers, often without deep technical knowledge, while Sales Engineers combine technical expertise with sales skills to explain complex products to clients. Both roles involve client interaction and sales, but Sales Engineers typically require technical degrees and provide more technical support during the sales process.

How much do manufacturing representatives make?

Manufacturing representatives typically earn a median annual salary of around $60,000, with salaries ranging from approximately $40,000 to $90,000 depending on experience, location, and industry. Compensation may also include commissions or bonuses based on sales performance, and strong communication and technical skills are often required for success in this role.

What does a manufacturing representative do?

A manufacturing representative acts as a liaison between manufacturing companies and clients, promoting and selling products or services. They often visit clients, demonstrate products, negotiate contracts, and have knowledge of manufacturing processes and industry standards.

Independent Manufactures Rep-1099

Three Rivers, MI โ€ข On-site

Contractor

Re-posted 4 hours ago

Job description

The Opportunity

TekModo is actively seeking experienced, self-motivated Independent Manufacturers’ Representatives to develop and manage regional sales territories across the United States. This is a pure commission-based, 1099 independent contractor relationship — ideal for reps who already carry complementary industrial, plastics, or materials product lines and are looking to add a high-value, differentiated HDPE and ABS sheet lines to their portfolio.

As TekModo’s sales footprint expands nationally, we are looking for reps with established relationships who can hit the ground running. There is no requirement to exclusively represent TekModo — we welcome reps who carry up to three non-competing, complementary lines. Reps carrying more than three active lines may be asked to confirm adequate focus and activity levels for TekModo as outlined in the representative agreement.

Ideal Representative Profile

You Are a Strong Fit If You:

  • Have an established book of business in marine, cargo, transportation, food processing, railroad, or industrial distribution markets.
  • Are currently calling on OEM manufacturers, fabricators, distributors, or industrial end-users who purchase or specify plastic sheet, liner, or composite materials.
  • Carry up to three complementary, non-competing product lines (e.g., composite panels, rubber, gasket, foam, fiberglass, metal, or other industrial materials). Lines that directly compete with HDPE sheet products are not permitted.
  • Have experience selling technical or engineered material products — you are comfortable discussing specifications, test data, and application engineering.
  • Operate as an independent manufacturers’ representative (1099) and are registered with MANA or a recognized rep association.
  • Are self-directed, relationship-focused, and capable of managing a regional territory with minimal administrative overhead.

Experience & Qualifications:

  • Minimum 3–5 years of industrial, plastics, composites, or materials sales experience preferred.
  • Demonstrated success selling into one or more of TekModo’s core end markets.
  • Ability to identify, qualify, and develop new accounts while growing existing relationships.
  • Comfortable with technical data sheets, ASTM test standards, and application-level product discussions.
  • Familiarity with sustainability selling (LEED, PCR content, carbon footprint) is a plus but not required.
