Job description
The Design Engineer Intern supports the engineering design of precast concrete products to meet structural, manufacturing, and constructability requirements. Working under the guidance of Design Engineers, mentors, supervisors, and other specialists, the intern gains practical experience applying engineering principles to active projects while learning Fabcon’s design processes, standards, and products.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Assist with engineering tasks on assigned projects under the direction and review of experienced Design Engineers.
- Review contract documents, drawings, and project specifications to understand the scope and requirements of assigned projects.
- Assist in developing efficient precast designs using industry standards and Fabcon design and detailing standards.
- Perform basic engineering calculations, including applicable wind, snow, concrete, and steel calculations, with guidance.
- Support the technical review of Fabcon shop drawings and collaborate with drafters and engineers to help prepare drawings for customer submittal.
- Assist production checkers and the engineering team with the timely completion and delivery of production drawings.
- Support Project Managers, Construction personnel, and Design Engineers in researching and resolving project or jobsite issues.
- Participate in project meetings, design discussions, and cross-functional collaboration.
- Complete assigned work accurately and within established timelines.
- Seek guidance from supervisors, mentors, and Design Engineers when additional support or clarification is needed.
- Develop an understanding of precast concrete design, manufacturing, erection, and construction practices.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or a related engineering discipline from an accredited college or university.
- Completion of foundational coursework in structural analysis, concrete design, steel design, or related subjects preferred.
- Strong problem-solving and analytical abilities.
- Willingness to learn and apply engineering principles in a professional environment.
- Ability to manage multiple assignments and changing priorities.
- Comfortable working in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing accurate work.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills.
- Familiarity with Microsoft Office programs, including Excel, Word, and Outlook.
- Structural engineering emphasis or interest.
- Familiarity with concrete and steel design principles.
- Basic knowledge of ACI, AISC, IBC, or ASCE 7 standards.
- Exposure to precast concrete design or the PCI Design Handbook.
- Experience with AutoCAD or engineering software such as LecWall, Mathcad, Enercalc, or Concise.
- Previous engineering, construction, manufacturing, or drafting internship experience.
- Ability to move up to 25 pounds. Reasonable accommodations will be provided when appropriate.
- Ability to work at a computer for extended periods.
- Ability to visit a manufacturing facility or construction site when required, including wearing appropriate personal protective equipment.
This position may work in a remote or office environment that is generally quiet, climate-controlled, and equipped with fluorescent lighting. The internship may also include occasional exposure to manufacturing facilities or active construction environments.
