What Does a Manufacturing Engineering Manager Do?

A manufacturing engineering manager is responsible for the overall function of the manufacturing processes for a company. In this role, you evaluate and implement strategies that improve productivity and lower costs. Your job duties include approving product design changes, managing budgets, overseeing development projects, approving equipment upgrades, and interacting with upper management. The qualifications needed for a career as a manufacturing engineering manager include a bachelor’s degree in an engineering field and several years of experience in manufacturing. There are professional certifications available to demonstrate your skills.

To thrive as a Manufacturing Engineering Manager, you need a strong background in engineering principles, process optimization, and project management, typically supported by a bachelor's degree in engineering and relevant experience. Familiarity with CAD software, ERP systems, Lean manufacturing methodologies, and certifications such as Six Sigma are commonly required. Leadership, problem-solving, and effective communication are critical soft skills for managing teams and cross-functional projects. These skills ensure efficient production processes, continuous improvement, and successful team performance in a competitive manufacturing environment.

  • Supporting engineering audits and inspections to check adherence to processes and standards
  • Challenging engineering strategies and reviewing Engineering Management Plans
  • Ensuring deployment of Critical Item Assessment (CIA) or Critical Technical Topic (CTT) activities
  • Managing and resolving engineering quality issues, including design reviews and DFMEA activities
  • Leading improvements related to Return of Experience (REX) to enhance engineering standards and processes
