Manufacturing Development Program information

What does a typical rotation look like in a Manufacturing Development Program, and how does it support career growth?

A typical rotation in a Manufacturing Development Program involves working in several departments, such as process engineering, quality assurance, and production management, over a period of 18 to 36 months. Each rotation is designed to expose you to different aspects of manufacturing operations, allowing you to build a well-rounded skill set. This structure not only helps you discover your strengths and interests but also develops your leadership and problem-solving abilities. By the end of the program, you are well-positioned for advancement into specialized roles or leadership positions within the company.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in a Manufacturing Development Program, and why are they important?

To thrive in a Manufacturing Development Program, candidates typically need a degree in engineering or a related technical field, along with strong analytical and problem-solving abilities. Familiarity with manufacturing software such as CAD, ERP systems, and lean manufacturing methodologies is often required. Excellent teamwork, adaptability, and communication skills help individuals excel in cross-functional environments and manage dynamic production challenges. These skills and qualities are vital for driving continuous improvement, efficiency, and innovation in manufacturing processes.

What is the difference between Manufacturing Development Program vs Manufacturing Engineer?

AspectManufacturing Development ProgramManufacturing Engineer
CredentialsTypically requires a bachelor's degree in engineering or related fieldRequires a bachelor's degree in engineering or manufacturing-related discipline
Work EnvironmentRotational program within manufacturing facilities, focusing on training and developmentDesign, improve, and oversee manufacturing processes on the production floor
Industry UsageCommonly used by companies to develop future manufacturing leadersWidely used for process optimization and production management roles

The Manufacturing Development Program is a structured training initiative aimed at developing future manufacturing professionals through rotations and learning experiences. In contrast, a Manufacturing Engineer focuses on designing and improving manufacturing processes. While both roles require similar educational backgrounds, the program emphasizes training and leadership development, whereas the engineer role centers on process execution and optimization.

What jobs will no longer exist in 2030?

In manufacturing development programs, roles heavily reliant on manual assembly or repetitive tasks, such as basic assembly line positions, are likely to decline due to automation and robotics. Jobs requiring routine quality checks may also diminish as AI and machine learning improve inspection accuracy, shifting demand toward roles focused on programming, maintenance, and oversight of automated systems.

What job makes $10,000 a month without a degree?

In manufacturing development programs, high-paying roles such as manufacturing managers or process engineers can earn around $10,000 per month, especially with experience and specialized skills. These positions often require technical knowledge, leadership abilities, and industry certifications but may not always require a traditional college degree.

What is the highest paying job in manufacturing?

In manufacturing, senior engineering roles such as Manufacturing Engineering Manager or Plant Director tend to be among the highest paying positions, often earning six-figure salaries. These roles typically require extensive experience, leadership skills, and knowledge of production processes and automation tools.

What is a manufacturing development program?

A manufacturing development program is a structured training initiative designed to prepare individuals for careers in manufacturing by providing hands-on experience, technical skills, and knowledge of production processes. Participants often rotate through different departments and may learn about quality control, automation, and safety standards to develop a comprehensive understanding of manufacturing operations.

__________
Position Overview
The Manufacturing Engineer position is a two-year contract position focused on process documentation, implementation, and shop floor improvement at the St. Louis headquarters. This role is well suited for an early career engineer who is willing to invest time on the production floor, learn directly from experienced operators, and apply engineering fundamentals and industry best practices to formalize and improve manufacturing processes. This position has two primary objectives: developing a comprehensive process documentation for heat treatment and material finishing operations and leading a 5S implementation in the Assembly department. Additional manufacturing engineering projects will be assigned as needs arise. This is a new position.
__________
Key Responsibilities
Heat Treatment and Material Finishing Process Documentation
  • Work with operators, supervisors, and the quality team to document current state heat treatment and material finishing processes, including recipes, parameters, cycle times, and quality checkpoints
  • Research industry standards and best practices for heat treatment processes relevant to CLMโ€™s materials and products (steel alloys, surface treatments, coatings)
  • Develop formal work instructions, standard operating procedures, and process parameter sheets suitable for operator use and new-hire training
  • Implement documented processes on the shop floor; validate through quality data and operator feedback; revise as needed until processes are stable and adopted
  • Establish a system for maintaining and updating process documentation as equipment, materials, and requirements change
5S Implementation in Assembly
  • Conduct a baseline assessment of the Assembly departmentโ€™s current workplace organization, identifying opportunities for improvement
  • Plan and lead a 5S implementation: Sort, Set in Order, Shine, Standardize, Sustain
  • Develop visual management standards, workplace layout improvements, and improved storage and labeling systems
  • Create audit checklists and scheduled to sustain the program beyond the contract term
  • Train Assembly personnel on 5S principles and build department ownership of the program
Additional Manufacturing Engineering Support
  • Contribute to process improvement initiatives, capacity studies, tooling evaluations, and other manufacturing engineering projects as assigned
  • Support ERP (Microsoft Dynamics 365) manufacturing module configuration and data validation efforts as needed
  • Participate in root cause analysis and corrective action processes for production quality issues
__________
Qualifications
Required:
  • Bachelorโ€™s degree in mechanical engineering, Industrial Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering or a closely related engineering discipline
  • Foundational understanding of manufacturing processes, materials science, and quality systems
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, GD amp;T, and process specifications
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Willingness to spend substantial time on the shop floor observing, learning, and implementing
Preferred:
  • One to three years manufacturing engineering experience in a machining, heat treatment or metal fabrication environment
  • Familiarity with lean manufacturing principles, 5S methodology, or continuous improvement frameworks
  • Exposure to heat treatment processes (hardening, tempering, case hardening, nitriding, black oxide, or similar)
  • Experience with technical writing or process documentation in a manufacturing setting
  • Proficiency with CAD software (SolidWorks preferred) and Microsoft Office
__________
Physical Requirements
  • Climbing, Balancing, Stooping, Kneeling, Crouching, Reaching, Standing, Walking, Pushing, Pulling, Lifting, Grasping, Feeling, Talking, Hearing, Repetitive Motions
  • Close visual acuity
  • Subject to noise, hazards, and oils when in production.
  • Lift up to 35 lbs
__________
Additional Information
This is a two-year fixed-term contract position. Standard benefits are available for the duration of the contract. Opportunity for a regular, full-time role may be considered based on business need and performance. The position is planned and budgeted as a two-year engagement.
