Job Description

The Department of Forest Resources and Environmental Conservationin the College of Natural Resources and Environment seeks a DataAnalysis and Web Visualization Specialist for the following responsibilities:

Assist faculty, staff, and graduate students with data analysis,visualization, and communication for research, teaching, andoutreach projects. Develop and support web-based tools anddisplays, including interactive tools such as R Shiny. Maintain andmodernize/update existing departmental online assets and webcontent such as the Virginia Big Tree Program and the Virginia TechDendrology websites. Develop and deliver training and provideconsultation to department members on data analysis workflows,visualization, and digital tools.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in a field related to data analysis,information technology, instructional technology, naturalresources, or a related discipline; or equivalent level of trainingand experience;
  • Demonstrated ability to organize, analyze, and visualizequantitative and qualitative data;
  • Demonstrated experience with software used for data analysis andvisualization such as R, R Shiny, Python, spreadsheets, or similartools;
  • Demonstrated ability to update and maintain web-based content,applications, databases, or other digital resources;
  • Demonstrated ability to assist faculty, staff, and students withdata analysis and visualization needs and to provide related usersupport and training;
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly in written and spokenEnglish, and to work collaboratively with individuals having arange of technical backgrounds;
Preferred Qualifications
  • Advanced degree or demonstrated experience in a disciplinerelated to the departmentโ€™s mission;
  • Demonstrated ability to develop interactive dashboards, webapplications, or data visualization tools for research, teaching,or outreach;
  • Experience with Enterprise Content Management Systems, HTML/CSS,web accessibility, and digital communications best practices;
  • Experience with environmental, forestry, natural resources, orgeospatial data.
