Manager Project Manager information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Project Manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Project Manager, you need strong organizational, leadership, and problem-solving skills, often supported by a bachelor’s degree and experience in project management. Familiarity with project management software (like Microsoft Project, Asana, or Jira) and certifications such as PMP or PRINCE2 are commonly expected. Outstanding communication, negotiation, and adaptability set exceptional project managers apart. These skills and qualifications are crucial for delivering projects on time, within scope, and fostering effective teamwork.

What does a Project Manager do?

A Project Manager is responsible for planning, executing, and overseeing projects to ensure they are completed on time, within budget, and meet the required quality standards. They coordinate the efforts of team members, manage resources, and communicate with stakeholders throughout the project lifecycle. Project Managers also identify and mitigate risks, resolve issues, and ensure that project objectives are achieved according to the defined scope.

What is the difference between Manager Project Manager vs Project Coordinator?

Employer & Industry UsageUsed across industries like IT, construction, financeCommon in similar industries, often as entry-level or support role

The Manager Project Manager holds a higher-level role with strategic responsibilities and team management, while the Project Coordinator focuses on supporting project execution through coordination and communication tasks. Both roles are essential but differ in scope and seniority.

What are some common challenges faced by Manager Project Managers in balancing leadership and project delivery responsibilities?

Manager Project Managers often juggle the dual responsibilities of overseeing a team of project managers while also ensuring successful delivery of complex projects. A common challenge is allocating sufficient time to support team development and mentorship without compromising project deadlines or quality. Additionally, they must ensure clear communication across multiple stakeholders and resolve resource conflicts proactively. Balancing strategic oversight with hands-on project problem-solving is key, and effective delegation and time management are essential to thrive in this role.

Job description

Architectural Practice Manager / Project Manager

Architecture & Design Studio
Calgary, Alberta | Hybrid Work Model
Salary: $85,000 – $110,000 + bonus, benefits (commensurate with experience)

Alternate Titles:
Architect, Project Manager, Practice Manager, Project Lead, Senior Project Manager, Project Director, Intern Architect, Assistant Project Manager, Senior Architect

About the Studio

Our client is a well-established, design-driven architectural practice recognized for its refined design sensibility, collaborative culture, and thoughtful approach to the built environment. Their portfolio spans contemporary commercial spaces, multi-residential developments, and public projects, all delivered with a high level of creativity and technical precision.

With a growing pipeline of work and an expanding team, the studio is seeking a senior-level Architectural Practice Manager / Project Manager to take on a key leadership role within the firm. This is a unique opportunity to influence both project delivery and overall studio operations.

The Role

This is a hybrid leadership role combining firm-wide practice management with hands-on project management responsibilities.

Practice Management Responsibilities

  • Oversee firm-wide project resourcing, staffing, and utilization using tools such as Monograph
  • Monitor project progress across the studio—understanding where each project sits in its lifecycle
  • Ensure balanced workloads across teams and proactively address capacity or burnout risks
  • Provide high-level coordination across all active projects, effectively “project managing the firm”
  • Support leadership in operational decision-making and performance tracking

Project Management Responsibilities

  • Lead projects from concept through construction, ensuring successful delivery at every stage
  • Develop and manage project schedules, budgets, and milestones, make regular site visits
  • Coordinate internal teams and external consultants (sub-consultants, engineers, etc.)
  • Monitor project financials, including hours, fees, and overall budget performance
  • Maintain strong client relationships and act as a key point of contact
  • Ensure quality control across design, documentation, and construction phases

This role will play a key part in delivering current priority projects, including larger scale multi-family, mixed-use, hospitality, public and other projects. Someone confident in both leadership and client-facing environments is required.

What You Bring

  • 7–12 years of experience in architecture, interior design, or architectural technology
  • Proven experience managing projects and leading teams on mid-to-large-scale developments
  • PMP designation an asset but not essential
  • Strong understanding of project financials, scheduling, and resource planning
  • Experience with firm-wide resourcing or operational oversight is a strong asset
  • Professional designation (Registered Architect or Intern Architect in Canada) preferred, but not required
  • Strong knowledge of building systems, construction methods, and contract administration
  • Proficiency in Revit (preferred) and familiarity with AutoCAD
  • Solid understanding of the Alberta Building Code and local permitting processes
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and organizational skills
  • Comfortable in a client-facing role and able to build lasting relationships

Why Join This Studio

  • Take your next step into a high-impact leadership role influencing both projects and studio operations
  • Work within a collaborative, design-focused environment that values quality and creativity
  • Be part of a well established firm with a strong reputation and that continues to grow in the Calgary market
  • Opportunity to mentor teams and shape internal processes
  • Competitive salary and flexible hybrid work model
  • Long-term growth potential within a respected practice

What to do now

If you're a well-rounded architectural professional who enjoys both leading projects and optimizing how a studio runs, this is an exceptional opportunity to take the next step in your career.
