Job description

About the Role

For nearly 30 years, Vogt Tax & Accounting has been a trusted leader in the East Valley business community and a multi-time recipient of the Chandler Chamber of Commerce Small Business of the Year award. While we're proud of our legacy, we're focused on building the future, and we're looking for talented individuals who want to grow with us.

The Director of Tax will lead that next chapter on the technical side, owning the quality of the work, developing the next generation of the team, and expanding the firm's reach. This is a role for someone who wants to put their stamp on an established, respected firm and build something bigger on a foundation that already works.

The Director is the senior leader of the firm, responsible for production quality, sign-off, staff development, and a real share of the firm's growth. The right person can run tax production independently at a high standard and wants the runway to grow both the team and the practice.

What You'll Own

Responsibilities center on four areas: technical & quality, people & development, client service, and business development.

Technical & Quality

• Review and analysis of tax returns and deliverables

• Final review and sign-off on tax returns

• Determining technical judgment calls such as defensible positions, risk tolerance, and methodology

• Research and document conclusions on tax questions; keep current on tax law changes and apply them to the firm's work

• Manage risk for both client and firm

People & Development

• Develop, train, and mentor preparer and staff-level team members

• Provide honest, timely feedback on technical work

Client Service

• Serve as the point of contact on assigned client matters

• Translate complex tax and accounting issues into plain language for clients

• Own retention of the existing client base through the quality and depth of the relationship

Business Development

• Identify and expand additional-service opportunities within the existing client base

• Generate and cultivate referral relationships (clients, attorneys, bankers, other advisors)

• Convert prospects into engagements; participate in scoping and pricing conversations

• Represent the firm credibly in the local professional community

Qualifications

• Active CPA (Arizona or reciprocity-eligible) or EA in good standing.

• Bachelor's in accounting or related field.

• Minimum 5 years in public accounting, with experience completing review of returns and workpapers.

• Strong background in 1040, partnership, S-corporation, and C-corporation returns and accounting work. Real estate experience preferred.

• Demonstrated experience developing and mentoring staff-level accountants.

• Fluency with Lacerte and QBO.

• Comfortable operating with full technical autonomy and minimal oversight.

• Small-firm or firm-in-growth experience a plus.

• Ability to prepare all types of tax returns start to finish, error free.

How We Work

We run a real business at a sustainable pace. Off-season, the office is closed Fridays. During busy season we hold to Monday - Friday, 8-4. We invest in our people because the work is better when the people doing it aren't running on empty.

Compensation

This is a senior leadership role with a compensation package to match:

Base salary: A competitive salary benchmarked to your experience and credentials.

Annual performance bonus: Tied to the quality of the work, the development of the team, and the strength of the practice.

Origination incentive: A direct share of the new business you bring to the firm.

Benefits: Medical, dental, and vision coverage, plus a 401(k) with company match

Why This Role

A real seat, not a title. Final authority over the technical function and a genuine hand in where the firm goes next.

An established foundation. A practice built over three decades, a loyal client base, and a recognized name in the East Valley. You're building on strength, not starting from zero.

Room to grow the practice and yourself. Meaningful business-development upside and the runway to build and lead a team.

A firm that's respected for the right reasons. Award-winning, relationship-driven, and known for client experience. The kind of place clients refer their friends to.

A pace you can sustain. An established firm that respects your time. We keep reasonable busy season hours and a genuine off-season.
