Engineering Section Manager - Substation

Mitsubishi Electric Power Products, Inc. (MEPPI) is seeking an Engineering Section Manager to lead the engineering functions supporting substation and power infrastructure design projects within our Substation Division.

In this role, you will oversee multidisciplinary engineering teams, external design partners, and equipment suppliers to ensure projects are completed safely, accurately, efficiently, and in accordance with customer requirements and industry standards. The ideal candidate is an experienced engineering leader with a strong background in power and energy infrastructure, substation design, and employee development.

What You'll Do
  • Lead Substation Engineering Projects: Oversee and direct engineering activities for substation and infrastructure design projects. Review and approve designs, drawings, calculations, and other technical deliverables produced by internal employees, external design firms, and equipment suppliers.
  • Manage and Develop the Engineering Team: Lead engineering staff in accordance with Company policies and procedures to achieve departmental and divisional objectives. Support employee development through training, cross-training, coaching, and continuing education opportunities. Participate in hiring, conduct performance reviews, and provide input regarding compensation decisions.
  • Ensure Engineering Quality: Lead cross-functional teams of internal engineers, external design engineers, and suppliers to maintain effective quality assurance and quality control of engineering deliverables. Develop and improve engineering processes, procedures, and standards to increase quality and efficiency.
  • Support Project Planning and Execution: Provide technical resources to support development engineering, project engineering, and drafting activities. Estimate, assign, and track engineering hours to ensure appropriate staffing and timely completion of project deliverables.
  • Partner with Sales and Customers: Support internal and external sales personnel with the interpretation and application of customer specifications. Help ensure proposed technical solutions meet customer requirements and applicable industry standards.
  • Resolve Technical and Quality Issues: Partner with the Quality Assurance and Service departments to evaluate and resolve customer, supplier, and product quality concerns.
  • Manage Engineering Budgets: Prepare, maintain, track, and communicate project engineering budgets, resource requirements, and performance against established targets.
  • Represent MEPPI in the Industry: Prepare and lead technical papers and articles for publication in professional journals and trade magazines. Present technical information at professional society meetings, industry conferences, and exhibitions.
  • Collaborate Globally: Establish and maintain effective communication with Mitsubishi Electric Corporation, or MELCO, and other global engineering partners as needed.
  • Be a Mitsubishi Ambassador: Promote the goals and positive, professional image of the Division by working cooperatively and responsively with customers, suppliers, visitors, and employees throughout MEPPI.
What you'll bring:
  • Education and Experience: Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, or a related discipline with at least seven years of experience supporting power and energy infrastructure projects, including at least three years of engineering management or leadership experience. An equivalent combination of education and experience will also be considered.
  • Substation Engineering Expertise: Advanced knowledge of substation and power infrastructure design, electrical codes, and IEEE standards related to electrical clearances, substation equipment, and equipment testing.
  • Technical Drawing Knowledge: Advanced understanding of drafting standards, drafting techniques, and engineering software, with the ability to read, interpret, and approve complex electrical and mechanical drawings.
  • Leadership Skills: Demonstrated ability to lead, develop, and motivate engineering professionals while managing multiple projects, priorities, and technical resources.
  • Problem-Solving Ability: Advanced analytical and problem-solving skills, including the ability to evaluate complex engineering issues and develop effective technical solutions.
  • Communication Skills: Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills with the ability to work effectively with customers, employees, suppliers, design partners, and global stakeholders.
  • Technology Skills: Advanced computer skills, including Microsoft Office, CAD platforms, and applicable engineering analysis software.
