The La Center School District is seeking an innovative, dynamic long-term substitute teacher to serve students at La Center High School. The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate a thorough knowledge of current trends in education including curriculum and instructional practices, subject matter content, and the effective use of data to modify instruction and improve student learning.
Our Mission: The mission of the La Center School District is to create a supportive learning environment that empowers students to reach their fullest potential. We will do this in partnership with families, the community, staff and students to develop confident and self-reliant lifelong learners who can thrive in a rapidly changing, more technologically advanced and diverse society.
Position Summary: The successful candidate will contribute to the district's mission of developing confident, self-reliant lifelong learners by teaching high school English Language Arts/History. The teacher will also actively participate in staff professional development.
Terms of Employment:
- The anticipated dates of the assignment are September 28 - December 18, 2026 and are subject to change based on the needs of the district.
- The successful candidate must be fingerprinted. Employment is contingent upon a satisfactory background check and clearance by the Washington State Patrol and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
Essential Functions:
- Plan and implement a program of study to follow State and District standards that meet the individual needs and abilities of students by providing effective differentiated instruction using research-based practices
- Annually establish student growth goals and develop strategies to ensure student growth
- Implement instructional methods and materials that are identified best practices for achieving stated objectives for instruction and student success, including the use of technology
- Guide the learning process toward the achievement of student outcomes
- Collaborate with other staff to cooperatively plan, develop, and implement a course of instruction designed to meet the needs of students in all curriculum areas
- Educate special needs students within the regular classroom environment in collaboration with other staff
- Create a classroom environment that is safe and conducive to learning for all students
- Collaborate with other staff to cooperatively develop effective, positive approaches for improving student behavior
- Fulfill District, State and Federal testing requirements
- Provide positive supports and guidance to a diverse population
- Effectively manage student behavior
- Assess students' academic learning and/or skills for the purpose of providing feedback to students, parents and administration regarding student progress, expectations, goals, etc.
- Advise families of student progress for the purpose of supporting teacher's expectations, developing methods for improvement and/or reinforcing classroom goals
- Maintain accurate, complete, confidential and timely records as required by law, District policy, and administrative regulations including attendance, IEP information, progress reports, cumulative records, and classroom inventory
- Collaborate with school personnel and parents for the purpose of improving the quality of student performance, developing solutions and planning curriculum
- Collaborate as a team to establish patterns of support with potential non-certificated personnel
- Demonstrate a professional and positive attitude when carrying out responsibilities as a faculty member
- Participate in building programs, including assemblies, contests, and other student activities
- Contribute to the collaborative effort of all staff to meet individual student needs through participation in staff meetings, in-service programs, workshops, and seminars
- Participate in activities beyond the regularly scheduled work day, as needed
- Communicate effectively with students, parents, staff, and community partners
- Attend required trainings and professional development opportunities to broaden expertise in the field of teaching
- Maintain a neat, clean personal appearance and traits of a good role model for students; work apparel should be appropriate for a safe and professional work environment
- Provide a safe learning environment for all students
- Regular attendance to carry out the duties and responsibilities of the position
- Perform other related duties as assigned
Required Qualifications:
- Possess or immediately qualify for a Washington State teaching certificate with an endorsement appropriate to teach high school level English and History (e.g., English Language Arts, History, or Humanities)
- Thorough knowledge of current trends in curriculum and instructional practices, subject-matter content, and data-driven decision-making
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Preferred Qualifications:
- Prior teaching experience or experience as a long-term substitute
Additional Requirements:
- Some stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing and/or pulling and fine finger dexterity are required
- May experience prolonged exposure to visual display terminals as required
- Ability to lift at least twenty (20) pounds with assistance
Salary: $170/full day; $105/half-day for the first 20 consecutive days of the assignment; pay thereafter is based on documented education and experience per the LCEA Negotiated Agreement.
Benefits: Eligible employees may accrue sick leave at the rate of one (1) hour of sick leave for every 40 hours worked under Washington State law. Upon working 630 hours in a school year, eligible employees and their qualified dependents may be eligible for insurance benefits through School Employees Benefits Board (SEBB) which includes, medical, dental, and vision insurance and employer-paid long-term disability, life and AD&D insurance for the employee only. Optional benefits under SEBB include supplemental life, long-term disability, FSA and DCAP.
