Job description

Job Purpose

The makerspace intern, under the support of the LC Makerspace and Technology Team, would help support the daily operations and use of the equipment at the LC Makerspace. Interns will learn how to operate machinery like 3D printers, laser cutters, embroidery machines, etc. and help develop content to instruct our youth through hands-on workshops and other mediums. This position will support the makerspace through completing machine maintenance and internal fabrication projects for prototyping in addition to supporting users as they work in the space.

Learning Objectives

  • Learn technical skills in 3D printing, CAD, laser cutting, CNC embroidery, design, and more.
  • Develop skills in technical communication and curriculum design.
  • Gain access to new machinery and fabrication techniques through hands-on projects.
  • Lead workshops and help users create their own projects in the space.
  • Build foundational knowledge of project planning and teamwork.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Assist in daily/weekly maintenance of fabrication equipment.
  • Learn new equipment through internal fabrication projects.
  • Help youth use the equipment safely throughout engagement center hours.
  • Help prepare materials for summer programming.
  • Assist instructors with executing summer programming.
  • Develop content to instruct kamalii on fabrication equipment.
  • Learn about LT and the Queenโ€™s legacy

Other Duties

  • Adheres to internship program guidelines and supports department needs as assigned. Completes a variety of tasks that provide broad exposure to departmental workflows. Actively builds new skills, strengthens existing abilities, and applies learning to realworld projects and responsibilities.

  • Interest in learning new technology, engineering, or fabrication processes
  • Willingness to make mistakes, ask questions, and fail forward

  • Comfortable speaking in front of others.

  • Comfort with computers, both Windows and Mac OS.
