Job Description

The University of Southern California (USC)'s School of Architecture seeks an experienced Rapid Prototyping Technician to join our Digital Fabrication team. As a part of our team, you will play a crucial role in the day-to-day operations of the Laser Lab and 3D Print Lab and provide technical expertise to students in the School of Architecture. This position involves hands-on work with machines, collaboration with faculty and staff, and fostering a safe and productive laboratory environment.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

  • Operate and maintain equipment, ensuring proper functionality
  • Training/supervision of student workers
  • Collaborate with faculty, researchers, and students on fabrication projects
  • Provide training and guidance to students on the safe and effective use of technology
  • Assist in the development and execution of experimental procedures
  • Conduct routine maintenance and troubleshoot technical issues
  • Ensure compliance with safety protocols and university regulations
  • Maintain an organized inventory of materials and supplies

EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • Proficient in the use of CAD software (Rhino/Fusion 360/AutoCad)
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office Suite and Adobe Illustrator
  • Experience with digital fabrications, specifically laser cutting equipment and related software
  • Ability to research and learn new technologies
  • Experience with 3D printing equipment and related software (FDM/Polyjet)
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to effectively engage students
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and student groups simultaneously

Other Requirements:

  • Must possess ability to safely perform the physical work required of all duties, including manual dexterity, agility, strength and coordination
  • Occasionally: sit, crouch/squat, climb, power grasping, heaving pushing/pulling
  • Must be able to work occasional weekdays/weeknights, holidays as needed beyond regularly scheduled hours.
  • Frequently: stand, walk, bend, reach above shoulder level, use of keyboard/mouse, light lifting (up to 25 lbs.), hand dexterity, hand twisting, simple grasping, light pushing / pulling; moderate assisted/unassisted lifting: moderate pushing / pulling; moving of machinery, exposure to outdoor work environments
  • Deliver excellent student service and maintain clarity and composure when faced with difficult situations

Preferred Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree, Combined experience/education as substitute for minimum education
  • Knowledge of architectural model making and processes
  • Experience in a physical computing environment or setting including the use of specialized makerspace technologies and equipment
  • Excellent skills in communication, organization, collaboration, and time-management
  • Ability to work successfully within a team of students, staff and faculty
  • Understanding of higher education operations
