HVAC & Refrigeration - Service Technician (Commercial)

Summerville, Sc

MaintenX is a leader in providing comprehensive HVAC and refrigeration services to commercial properties, including office buildings, restaurants, retail centers, healthcare facilities, and hotels. We are looking for an experienced HVAC & Refrigeration Technician to join our team, focusing on the installation, repair, and maintenance of heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and commercial refrigeration systems.
Job Summary:
The HVAC & Refrigeration Technician will be responsible for installing, diagnosing, and repairing HVAC and refrigeration systems in commercial buildings. The role requires expertise in working with large, complex systems, such as rooftop units, commercial-grade refrigeration, chillers, and energy management systems. The technician will ensure systems operate efficiently and comply with safety standards, while also minimizing downtime and disruption to commercial operations.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Install, maintain, and repair HVAC systems in commercial buildings, including rooftop units, split systems, air handlers and air distribution systems.
  • Install, maintain, and repair commercial refrigeration systems, including walk-in coolers, freezers, refrigerated display cases, and ice machines.
  • Perform diagnostic checks and troubleshooting on malfunctioning HVAC and refrigeration systems, identifying issues and providing timely repairs.
  • Inspect and test HVAC and refrigeration systems to ensure proper functioning, including electrical circuits, thermostats, compressors, fans, and condensers.
  • Perform preventive maintenance on HVAC and refrigeration equipment, including changing filters, cleaning coils, and checking refrigerant levels.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, technical diagrams, and work orders to ensure accurate installation and repair of HVAC and refrigeration systems.
  • Work with energy management systems (EMS) to optimize energy efficiency in commercial environments, ensuring compliance with energy-saving guidelines and standards.
  • Install, calibrate, and maintain control systems, including thermostats, sensors, and building automation systems for commercial properties.
  • Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal safety standards and building codes, including EPA regulations regarding refrigerant handling.
  • Respond to emergency repair calls for HVAC or refrigeration system failures in commercial buildings, minimizing downtime and ensuring quick resolutions.
  • Document all repairs and maintenance tasks performed, including parts used, systems serviced, and recommendations for future maintenance or upgrades.
  • Collaborate with building management and other trades to coordinate HVAC and refrigeration services during building renovations or system upgrades.
Requirements:
  • Experience: Minimum of 3-5 years of experience as an HVAC & Refrigeration Technician, specifically in commercial settings such as office buildings, retail spaces, restaurants, and hotels.
  • On Call Schedule: At least one week out of the month
  • Licensing & Certifications:
    • Valid HVAC technician license, as required by local regulations.
    • EPA Section 608 certification for handling refrigerants.
    • Additional certifications in areas such as energy management, building automation, or advanced HVAC systems are a plus.
  • Technical Skills:
    • Strong knowledge of commercial HVAC systems, including rooftop units, chillers, boilers, and energy management systems.
    • Expertise in commercial refrigeration systems, including walk-in coolers, freezers, ice machines, and refrigerated cases.
    • Proficiency in using diagnostic tools, such as multimeters, pressure gauges, and refrigerant recovery equipment.
    • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, wiring diagrams, and technical specifications for HVAC and refrigeration systems.
  • Physical Requirements: Ability to lift heavy equipment (up to 50 lbs), work in tight spaces, and perform tasks on ladders or rooftops as required.
  • Driver’s License: Must have a valid driver’s license with a clean driving record for travel between job sites.
  • Availability: Must be available for on-call shifts and emergency repairs, including some nights or weekends.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience working with energy-efficient systems and technologies, such as variable refrigerant flow (VRF) systems and smart thermostats.
  • Familiarity with building automation systems (BAS) and energy management software in commercial properties.
  • Strong communication skills to interact with building owners, property managers, and tenants.
  • OSHA 10 or 30 certification is a plus.
