Mainframe Systems Programmer
Contract Length: 1 year
Location: New York, NY
Work Setup: Remote, Hybrid, or On-site
Our client is seeking an experienced Mainframe Systems Programmer to support, enhance, and modernize mission-critical applications used for field operations, payroll, reporting, crew scheduling, and regulatory compliance. This role combines production support, application development, systems integration, and large-scale data migration.
Mainframe Systems Programmer Responsibilities
  • Maintain and enhance legacy mainframe applications supporting critical management systems.
  • Monitor and troubleshoot batch jobs, interfaces, workflows, and production issues.
  • Develop and support COBOL programs and JCL processes.
  • Load and validate crew schedules while ensuring operational continuity.
  • Manage integrations with Kronos, PeopleSoft, enterprise data lakes, and downstream reporting platforms.
  • Develop operational, business, and regulatory reports.
  • Lead the migration of historical data to a modern replacement platform.
  • Validate migrated data for accuracy, completeness, and operational readiness.
  • Document system processes, integrations, and workflows while providing knowledge transfer.

Mainframe Systems Programmer Required Qualifications
  • 10+ years of application development experience, preferably in mainframe or legacy enterprise environments.
  • 6+ years of hands-on COBOL and JCL experience.
  • Strong knowledge of batch processing, data interfaces, system integrations, and production support.
  • Proven ability to resolve complex, time-sensitive issues in mission-critical systems.
  • Experience developing operational or regulatory reports.
  • Strong collaboration, documentation, and problem-solving skills.

Mainframe Systems Programmer Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with large-scale data migration or application modernization.
  • Transportation, logistics, or crew management systems experience.
  • Familiarity with Kronos, PeopleSoft, or similar enterprise platforms.
  • Knowledge of FRA Hours of Service or other regulated reporting requirements.
