Schedule Hours: Monday - Friday 7:30 AM to 4:30 PM

Position Summary:
This position is expected to function independently or with minimal supervision in all laboratory areas and duties including but not limited to, performing phlebotomy, specimen processing, and clerical duties, all of which are to be performed in a timely and efficient manner. Responsibilities
Essential Functions
Front Office Functions
  • Provides support in the areas of patient registration, demonstrates a thorough knowledge of third-party reimbursement requirements and regulations
  • Performs start up duties prior to opening Lab
  • Adds tests for add-ons and handles recollects
  • Properly charges STATs to HMO's
  • Copies insurance cards
  • Uses proper stamps on orders such as FROZEN, Labcorp, Quest
  • Prints daily logs
  • Dispenses Petty Cash
  • Faxes reports from previous day
  • Handling of drug screens collections
  • Quotes lab prices
  • Makes deposits
  • Print labels for requisitions and specimens
  • Properly obtains ABN forms for Medicare patients
  • Obtains orders from Intergy or patients
  • Obtains and uses valid diagnosis codes
  • Properly identification of patients
  • Collects any monies from patients and issue receipts
  • Challenges ambiguous orders and handles according to protocol, and taking takes verbal orders
  • Verify patient insurance information
  • Provide services for patients and doctors offices such as lab results
  • Directs incoming faxes to correct personnel
  • Answers phone and assists callers, properly transfers calls
  • Properly calls or faxes any panic or stat results to appropriate provider per written protocol
  • Quantity/Timeliness of work that produces optimal productivity

Phlebotomy
  • Properly identifies patient at draw point
  • Verify orders and requisitions match, checking all tests
  • Perform peripheral IV insertion
  • Communication with immediate supervisor(s) on any issues that may impact patient care

Uses proper phlebotomy technique
  • Ensures ABN is properly filled out and signed
  • Uses Personal Protective Equipment when performing venipuncture
  • Properly prepares specimen for transport
  • Labels specimens properly
  • Supplies proper information on requisitions pertaining to draw such as Date, time, initials, number and type of tubes drawn
  • Properly interprets orders
  • Able to draw 6 patients an hour (35 to 40 patients per day)
  • Rarely needs a butterfly to draw patients. (Ask assistance before using a butterfly)
  • Keeps requisitions filed in folder and assists with preparing the folders for scanning
  • Provides phlebotomy services to doctor's offices when needed such as Special Procedures and Family Practice
Back Office
  • Prepares reports for distribution
  • Loads any specimens passed through
  • Supplies missing billing information such diagnosis to remote labs
  • Works internal billing charges, no more than 3 days behind
  • Keeps daily requisitions filed correctly and neatly
  • Works outstanding tests report for LabCorp and Quest
  • Works error logs for LabCorp and Quest
  • Retrieves results and transmit requisitions when needed
  • Directs incoming mail to correct personnel
  • Performs mail-outs daily, obtaining correct addresses for outside providers
Processing Specimens
  • Properly spin down specimens when needed, checking for fibrinogen and clots
  • Pour off any specimens needed for special transport tubes
  • Prepare specimens for transportation with couriers
  • Distributes and handles STATs according to protocol
  • Performs "Clean-outs" in Flex-e Suite
Inventory
  • Keeps accurate Inventory of supplies
  • Checks and monitors supply levels weekly, not running out
  • Orders supplies on a scheduled routine basis such as monthly
  • Distributes supplies to remote labs such as in-house tubes
  • Distributes supplies to patients with instructions
  • Keeps supply area neat and clutter free
Computer Utilization
  • Knows how to look up results and print in Intergy, Flex-e Suite, LCM
  • Knows how to print patient demographic sheets and insurance cards
  • Can load insurances into Intergy and set proper coverage
  • Create requisitions in Clinicians for Labcorp, Quest, LIS
  • Can perform Result retrieval and transmissions
  • Able to print billing report or work lists for STAT, MAIL, and Fax logs
  • Performs "Clean-outs" in Flex-e Suite
  • Able to register a new patient in Intergy or make changes to existing information
  • Properly loads drug studies
  • Knowledge of hospital and laboratory information systems, specimen processing, billing, reference testing and scheduling
  • Maintains reasonably regular, punctual attendance consistent with Orlando Health policies, the ADA, FMLA, and other federal, state, and local standards
  • Maintains compliance with all Orlando Health policies and procedures
  • Performs all other duties as assigned
Other Related Functions
  • Maintains an organized and clean work area
  • Places phones on and off service at the appropriate time
  • Participates in maintenance of office supplies
  • Performs other incidental and related duties as required and assigned
  • Travel to different FMC work locations as requested
  • Ability to work flexible hours to meet the needs of the department

Qualifications
Education/Training
  • High School Graduate of equivalent required.

Licensure/Certification
  • Must obtain within six (6) months of hire; phlebotomy certification from American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP), the
    National Phlebotomy Association (NPA), American Society of Phlebotomy Technicians (ASPT) or any certification program
    requiring a phlebotomy rotation with a minimum of 100 patient collections.
