What is magazine marketing?

Magazine marketing involves promoting and selling magazines to targeted audiences through various channels. This can include developing advertising campaigns, managing subscriptions, building partnerships, and utilizing digital platforms to increase readership. Professionals in magazine marketing analyze market trends, identify potential readers, and create strategies to boost both print and digital circulation. Their goal is to enhance the magazine’s visibility, attract advertisers, and grow the subscriber base.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in magazine marketing, and why are they important?

To thrive in Magazine Marketing, you need a strong grasp of marketing principles, audience analysis, and content strategy, usually supported by a degree in marketing, communications, or a related field. Familiarity with digital marketing platforms, CRM systems, analytics tools, and sometimes certifications like Google Analytics are highly valuable. Creativity, strong communication skills, and the ability to collaborate effectively with editorial and sales teams help professionals excel in this role. These skills are crucial for reaching target audiences, driving magazine subscriptions and ad sales, and adapting to the evolving media landscape.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in magazine marketing, and how can they be addressed?

Magazine marketing professionals often face the challenge of staying relevant in a rapidly evolving digital landscape, where print readership may be declining and audience preferences shift quickly. To address this, marketers must be agile, leveraging digital channels such as social media, email campaigns, and online partnerships to complement traditional print strategies. Collaborating closely with editorial, design, and sales teams is essential for crafting integrated campaigns that engage both existing and new readers. Embracing data analytics to track campaign performance and audience behavior can also help refine strategies and demonstrate the value of magazine content to advertisers.

Our portfolio includes some of the world's most recognized media brands, reaching millions of consumers through print, digital, social, video, and emerging platforms. We are committed to creating meaningful experiences for our audiences while fostering a collaborative, innovative, and inclusive workplace where great ideas thrive.

Key Responsibilities (What You Are Doing)

  • Partner closely with Creative, Brand Marketing, Product, Data, and other cross-functional teams to deliver personalized, customer-centric experiences that align with brand objectives.
  • Analyze campaign performance across key metrics, including engagement, click-through rate, conversion, and retention, and translate insights into actionable recommendations.
  • Manage an ongoing testing and optimization roadmap to continuously improve campaign performance and customer experiences.
  • Champion lifecycle marketing best practices, personalization strategies, and emerging email marketing trends to drive innovation across the portfolio.
  • Help build scalable lifecycle marketing processes that support membership growth while strengthening audience loyalty across Hearst's brands.

Qualifications (What We're Looking For)

  • 2+ years of experience in lifecycle, CRM, email, performance, or digital marketing, or equivalent experience.
  • Experience developing and executing email marketing campaigns that drive measurable business results.
  • Proficiency with email service providers (ESPs), marketing automation platforms, and audience segmentation strategies.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret campaign performance data and develop strategic recommendations.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects while maintaining strong attention to detail in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent collaboration and communication skills with experience working across creative, product, marketing, and analytics teams.
  • A proactive, adaptable, and results-oriented mindset with a passion for testing, learning, and continuous improvement.
  • Ability to work in our New York City office on a hybrid schedule of four days per week.

Benefits (What We Offer)

  • Work with the Best: Collaborate with top-tier professionals across media, advertising, tech, fashion, lifestyle, and publishing, shaping the future of these dynamic industries.
  • Grow Your Skills: Unlock your potential with access to innovative training programs, immersive workshops, and exclusive industry events.

The base salary range for this role is $66,000-$77,000. This position is not eligible for bonus or commission compensation. Actual compensation will be determined based on experience, skills, qualifications, and location.
