TFA is an equal opportunity employer

The Machine Operator is responsible for machining manufactured pipe fittings to ANSI Code B16.9 specifications, producing highquality weld fittings such as elbows and tees with precise bevels and dimensions. This role requires strong mechanical aptitude, adherence to established work instructions, and the ability to adjust and operate machining equipment safely and efficiently.

Requires proficiency and understanding of the essential work instructions and operating and quality control procedures that govern:

  • Load fittings that are being machined properly in the fixture(s) maintaining correct placement to ensure correct wall and length. Follow proper clamping procedure before indexing or in-feeding the cutting heads.
  • Change tooling as needed due to wear or part variation [1.1]. Following any tooling change, the operator must check and adjust the length, inner and outer diameter chamfers, and compound bevels before resuming the production run.
  • Adjust tooling to accommodate the next size of fitting. When going from XH to STD for instance, the I.D. must be changed and at the same time keep all the other cutting tools in the correct relationship to each other.
  • Visually inspect parts that are being machined to ensure they meet the code ANSI B16.9. Maintain quality parts with hourly checks of lengths, plane, I.D. / O.D. Visually check for surface flaws on each fitting. Record results of hourly checks on the Process Control Sheets.
  • Grind fittings using hand grinder to remove burrs and surface flaws, reducing the rework time needed at another station. This grinding is limited to the length of time it takes to machine another part.
  • Grinding/Paint line/Forge Shop: direct flow of finished product to correct station, i.e.
          1. Paintline: parts needing no further work.
          2. Grinding: parts needing grinding go the grind line.
          3. Preliminary Inspection: short, thin and otherwise non-conforming product goes to preliminary inspection. This must be done promptly and a โ€œrouting tagโ€ and โ€œreject tagโ€ properly filled out to accompany the fittings.
  • Identify unacceptable parts and separate from โ€œwork-in-progressโ€ before machining and send to non-conformance for inspection and evaluation.
  • Inspect and adjust machinery periodically, making sure to use the proper lockout/tagout procedure before doing any adjustments.
  • Clean out ways and keep chips swept up around machine to provide a safe and efficient work area.
  • Operate forklift when required to move fittings. Report any visual or suspected mechanical problems on the machines. Grease and maintain the cutting heads.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Work environment:

  • Extensive exposure to dirt, smoke, grease, noise, oil, graphite, lubricants, cold and or hot environmental conditions.
  • Continuous exposure to Forklifts, overhead cranes, hot steel, steel shavings, hot chips, moving parts on bevel machine

Physical demands:

  • Constant lifting of cut pipe up to a maximum of 65 lbs., bending, stretching, reading all intricate marks on gauges.
  • Work requires regular to continuous physical effort; stand on feet entire 10-hour shift. Bend in cramped space, extreme heat from forges. Must be able to lift a maximum of 65 lbs. ย ย ย ย ย ย ย
  • Wear protective equipment required in all production areas including coveralls or long sleeves, gloves, hard hat, hearing protection, metatarsal steel toed boots, and safety glasses with side shields.

Required education and experience:

  • Small tool familiarity
  • Able to read, write, and perform basic math.
  • Demonstrated mechanical skills.
  • Proficient reading of tape measure, square, dial calipers, and veneer calipers.
  • Knowing the flow of finished product through production.
  • Help set up and determine tooling problems.

Preferred education and experience:

  • Previous relevant experience preferred
  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred
  • Job training for this position is provided by department ย
