What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an LPC Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as an LPC Intern, you need a master's degree in counseling or a related field, completion of required coursework, and eligibility for supervised clinical hours. Familiarity with electronic health records (EHRs), diagnostic tools like the DSM-5, and counseling documentation systems is essential. Strong interpersonal skills, active listening, empathy, and self-awareness help LPC Interns connect with clients and work effectively under supervision. These skills and qualifications ensure ethical, competent care and support professional growth toward full licensure.

What are some common challenges LPC Interns face during their supervised experience, and how can they overcome them?

LPC Interns often encounter challenges such as managing a diverse caseload, navigating complex client needs, and balancing administrative tasks with direct counseling. Additionally, interns may feel uncertain about their clinical skills or experience occasional difficulty establishing therapeutic rapport. Overcoming these challenges involves seeking regular supervision, engaging in peer consultation, and staying organized with documentation. Proactively communicating with supervisors and participating in professional development opportunities can also help build confidence and competence throughout the internship.

What are LPC Interns?

LPC Interns, or Licensed Professional Counselor Interns, are individuals who have completed the required educational qualifications for counseling but are in the process of completing supervised clinical experience needed for full licensure. They work under the supervision of a licensed professional counselor to gain practical experience and develop their counseling skills. LPC Interns can provide counseling services to clients, but their work is closely monitored to ensure ethical and effective practice. This supervised period is an essential step toward becoming a fully licensed professional counselor.

Job description

Overview

With compassion and commitment, Child Abuse Specialists embody the Legacy mission of making life better for others. They do this by collecting psychosocial information from parents/guardians of patients, assessing immediate risk. They work in partnership with the Emergency Department multi-disciplinary team, Law Enforcement, Department of Human Services and CARES NW. You are committed to working with healthcare teams to ensure every patient receives the care, comfort and dignity they deserve. Join us as we help children and families overcome the crisis of abuse, and move forward toward hope and healing. Established in 1987, CARES Northwest is one of nation's oldest children's advocacy centers and the largest in Oregon. Our program is a unique collaboration of four health systems - Randall Children's Hospital at Legacy Emanuel, OHSU's Doernbecher Children's Hospital, Kaiser Permanente, and Providence Children's Health - and child abuse multidisciplinary partners in Multnomah and Washington counties. Advocating for over 42,000 children in our 34-year history, CARES Northwest is a leader in our region's efforts to protect our community's children and promote their healing.

Responsibilities

Child Abuse Specialists (CAS) typically work irregular and unscheduled hours and are sited at Legacy Emanuel Hospital Department (ED). When called upon they are responsible for responding within 30 minutes or less.

As a condition of hire and as requested throughout employment, Cares NW requires child abuse background checks which are conducted through the Department of Human Services (DHS) Background Check Unit (BCU).   This requires a signed release and authorization and the background check includes a search of DHS systems for any history of abuse or neglect of a child. If a record exists, the BCU will report the finding back to CARES NW and findings will be addressed in accordance with program policies.

Education:

MSW, MA, or MEd in social work, counseling, or related field.

Experience:

Minimum two years' experience relating to child abuse issues.

Skills:

Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Ability to relate well to children and adults in crisis. Strengths in working as a part of a multidisciplinary team.
