What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Location Analyst, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Location Analyst, you need strong analytical skills, proficiency in geographic information systems (GIS), and a relevant degree in geography, urban planning, or data science. Familiarity with tools like ArcGIS, QGIS, spatial databases, and data visualization software is typically required. Strong attention to detail, effective communication, and problem-solving abilities help you interpret data and present actionable insights. These skills ensure accurate site selection and strategic decision-making for businesses reliant on geographic and demographic analysis.

What are some common challenges a Location Analyst faces when gathering and interpreting geospatial data for business decisions?

A Location Analyst often faces challenges such as ensuring data accuracy, integrating data from multiple sources, and accounting for rapidly changing market conditions. Interpreting geospatial data requires strong analytical skills to identify relevant patterns while filtering out noise. What are location analysts?

Location analysts are professionals who use data and geographic information to help businesses decide where to open new stores, offices, or other facilities. They analyze factors such as demographics, competition, traffic patterns, and economic trends to determine the best locations for business operations. Their work helps companies maximize profitability and minimize risk by making informed site selection decisions.

Job description

At Amazon we are passionate about creating a shopping experience that customers will love. If you're interested in a fast-paced, ambiguous, and highly-collaborative environment that's more start-up than big company, we want to talk to you.
Worldwide Grocery Stores (WWGS), Growth & Development team is seeking a Location Analyst to support strategic site selection and location planning across all Amazon physical retail concepts. This role sits at the intersection of advanced analytics, real estate strategy, and customer experience, leveraging geospatial intelligence and demographic modeling to identify optimal locations that drive growth and deliver exceptional value to customers.
As a Location Analyst, you will be responsible for conducting comprehensive market assessments, building sophisticated analytical models, and providing data-driven recommendations that inform multi-million dollar real estate investment decisions. You'll work with GIS technology, large-scale demographic datasets, and proprietary customer data to evaluate trade areas, forecast site performance, and identify expansion opportunities across diverse retail formats and geographies.
This role requires a unique blend of technical expertise and business acumen. You'll translate complex spatial data and statistical analyses into clear, actionable insights for cross-functional partners including Real Estate Development, Operations, Finance, and senior leadership. Your work will directly influence where and how Amazon serves communities nationwide, ensuring our physical retail presence meets customers where they are with the right format, in the right location, at the right time.
The ideal candidate thrives in a fast-paced environment where speed and accuracy are equally critical. You'll balance rigorous analytical standards with the urgency required in competitive real estate markets, often delivering rapid assessments on time-sensitive opportunities while maintaining the data quality and methodological rigor that inform high-stakes decisions. This position offers the opportunity to shape Amazon's physical retail footprint and make a measurable impact on how millions of customers access Amazon's products and services in their daily lives.
Key job responsibilities
- Develop and maintain demographic datasets and geospatial tools to support location analysis across Amazon's physical retail concepts.
- Execute site screening analyses and produce comprehensive reports that evaluate market potential, trade area characteristics, and competitive dynamics.
- Apply advanced statistical methods and GIS software to calculate demographic metrics, forecast performance, and assess site viability.
- Create thematic maps and data visualizations that communicate complex spatial patterns and insights to stakeholders.
- Audit data for accuracy and consistency, ensuring high-quality inputs for location decision-making.
- Build and maintain research tracking systems, historical databases, and reporting frameworks for site analysis.
- Partner with Real Estate, Operations, and Finance teams to provide data-driven recommendations on location strategy.
- Conduct market research and competitive analysis to identify expansion opportunities across retail formats.
- Support forecasting activities including site visits, market assessments, and performance modeling.
- Drive process improvements through automation and optimization of analytical workflows using ETL tools.
- Present findings and recommendations to senior leadership, translating technical analysis into actionable business insights.
- Move quickly to deliver timely insights that enable rapid decision-making on time-sensitive real estate opportunities.
A day in the life
Your morning starts analyzing demographic data for urgent site assessments, running GIS models to evaluate trade areas across Amazon's retail concepts. You collaborate with Real Estate and Operations teams, presenting location recommendations backed by statistical forecasts. Afternoons involve automating analytical workflows, auditing data quality, and preparing executive presentations. You respond rapidly to competitive opportunities, delivering actionable insights that inform multi-million dollar real estate decisions. Every analysis connects back to one goal: identifying optimal locations that best serve customers across Amazon's physical retail portfolio.
About the team
Our mission is to leverage new technology, comprehensive data analysis, and deep market insights to help WWGS identify and secure optimal locations for the Amazon omnichannel offer. We provide actionable insights through site forecasting, competitive intelligence, and mapping and data visualization for store and geo strategy.
We value independent thinking with a focus on providing our customers high quality products informed by extensive research and experience.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor's degree or above in statistics, business analytics, data analytics, data science, computer science or related field
- Knowledge of at least one data-focused technology tool, such as Python, SQL, Alteryx, Amazon QuickSight, or similar
- Experience analyzing data and creating reports for leadership
- Experience managing multiple projects and priorities across teams in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment
- 3+ years of professional experience in location analytics, site selection, or geospatial analysis
- Advanced proficiency with GIS software (ArcGIS, QGIS, or similar platforms)
- Experience with data modeling
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Knowledge of data analysis languages (e.g., R, Stata, Python, etc.) or other statistical software
- Experience in data science, business analytics, business intelligence, or similar experience in big data environments
- Experience working with, presenting to and influencing senior executives up to VP level
- Experience in retail site selection, real estate analytics, or location planning
- Experience in demographic analysis and market research methodologies
