Job description

Reporting to the Manager, Linguistics, the Linguist I assists the Education Department in Serrano language revitalization and promotes and executes the educational goals and priorities set by the Tribe and the Education Board.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Assists in the development and production of culturally relevant linguistic and curricular materials and the Serrano fluency transfer system (FTS) for use in all learning settings.

2. Assists with research, preparation, and delivery of comprehensive plans for the Language Revitalization Program in alignment with the 2040 Vision.

3. Assists in the archival work of Serrano language recordings for use in teaching materials for Serrano language program intended for children and adult tribal citizens.

4. Assists with the recording, editing, processing, and maintaining Serrano Language audio and audio-based projects. Assist with organizing and attending Serrano community audio events.

5. Creates and disseminates reports on issues relating to American Indian language retention and revitalization discussed at attended academic conferences.

6. Performs other duties as assigned to support the efficient operation of the department.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree in Anthropology, Linguistics, American Indian Studies, or applied Linguistics with emphasis in Native American languages is required.
  • Related, relevant, and/or direct experience may be considered in lieu of minimum educational requirements indicated above.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSA)

  • Must be willing and capable of learning the Serrano language.
  • Strong research, oral, and written skills to prepare and present professional workshops, panels, presentations, handbooks, handouts, and newsletters.
  • Demonstrated computer skills, knowledge of desktop publishing software including working with sound or audio recordings, editing and copying.
  • Must be a team player and can develop and plan program objectives with support.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective, collaborative relationships and the ability to enlist support at all levels to accomplish goals.
  • Skilled in creative problem solving.
  • Skilled in effectively interacting and communicating with diverse groups including students, parents, peers, leadership, and members of the San Manuel Community.
  • Skilled in setting priorities that accurately reflect the relative importance of goals and job responsibilities.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects in a demanding environment.
  • Experience in American Indian language as well as knowledge of California Indian community needs.
  • Experience with Native American languages, preferably Uto-Aztecan languages.
  • Knowledge of San Manuel and Morongo communities, their history, culture, and political structure.
  • Practical experience in tribal community settings.

LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS AND REGISTRATIONS

  • As a condition of employment, candidates and incumbents are required to pass pre- and post-employment screening including Live-Scan, background, drug testing, and tuberculosis (TB) testing.
  • No Driving Responsibilities: Role does not require a driver's license or insurance.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/ WORKING CONDITIONS - ENVIRONMENT

  • Primary work environment is in a climate-controlled office setting.
  • Work requires travel to attend meetings, trade shows, and conferences.
  • Incumbents may be required to work evening, weekend and holiday shifts.
  • Must be able to work in a fast-paced, high-demand environment.
  • Strength sufficient to exert up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects and/or move up to 40 pounds occasionally.
  • Sedentary work: involves sitting most of the time. Constantly operates a computer and other office productivity machinery, such as a calculator, copy machine, and computer printer.
  • Physical activities that apply to the essential functions of the position are balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions.
  • Hearing sufficient to hear conversational levels in person, via videoconference and over the telephone.
  • Speech sufficient to make oneself heard and understood in person, in front of groups, in meetings, via videoconference and over the telephone.
  • Visual acuity that meets the requirements of the position: The worker is required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; expansive reading and visual inspection of employees, visitors or facility.
  • Mobility sufficient to safely move in an office environment, walk, stoop, bend and kneel, and enter, exit and operate a motor vehicle in the course of travel to promotional events, meetings, conferences, trade shows and San Manuel properties.
  • Endurance sufficient to sit, walk and stand for extended periods, and maintain efficiency throughout the entire work shift and during extended work hours.
  • The employee may be exposed to fumes or airborne particles including secondhand smoke.
