What are live-in family drivers?

Live-in family drivers are professional chauffeurs who reside at their employer's home and provide transportation services for the household. Their duties typically include driving family members to work, school, appointments, and social events, as well as running errands and maintaining the vehicles. Because they live on the premises, they may also be expected to have flexible work hours and be available for driving needs outside of standard schedules. In addition to driving, some may assist with light household tasks as needed. This role requires trustworthiness, discretion, and a valid driver's license, often with a clean driving record.

What are the duties of a family driver?

A family driver is responsible for safely transporting family members to and from appointments, school, and activities, while maintaining the vehicle's cleanliness and ensuring its proper maintenance. They may also handle errands, plan routes, and adhere to traffic laws. Good driving skills, a valid license, and discretion are essential for this role.

What is the best driving side hustle?

The best driving side hustle depends on individual preferences and schedule, but popular options include rideshare driving, delivery services, and chauffeur services. These roles typically require a valid driver's license, a reliable vehicle, and good customer service skills. They offer flexible hours and can be a steady source of extra income for drivers such as live-in family drivers seeking additional work.

How much is it to hire a private driver?

The cost to hire a live-in family driver typically ranges from $300 to $800 per day, depending on experience, location, and duties. Many drivers also receive benefits such as housing, meals, and transportation allowances, which can affect overall compensation. Rates may vary based on the driver’s skills, schedule, and the complexity of the driving tasks involved.

What are some common challenges faced by live-in family drivers, and how can they successfully adapt to this role?

Live-in family drivers often need to balance flexible schedules, privacy boundaries, and the diverse needs of all family members. Adapting to frequent changes in daily routines, including early mornings, late evenings, or last-minute travel requests, is essential. Building clear communication with employers and maintaining professionalism, while respecting the household's privacy, helps drivers integrate smoothly. Over time, familiarity with family preferences and local routes enables drivers to anticipate needs and provide a higher level of service.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Live In Family Driver, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Live In Family Driver, you need a valid driver's license, excellent driving record, and knowledge of safe driving practices. Familiarity with navigation systems, vehicle maintenance basics, and sometimes defensive driving certifications are typically required. Punctuality, discretion, reliability, and strong interpersonal skills are essential soft skills for building trust with the family. These abilities ensure safe, efficient transportation and a harmonious, dependable presence within the household.

Job description

Overview

A warm and active family is seeking an experienced and professional Mother's Helper to join their household as soon as the right person is found. The family consists of a hands-on stay-at-home mother, her husband, a four-year-old daughter, a 15-month-old daughter, and a son due at the end of November. The family is currently based in Spring Lake, New Jersey through early September, and the right candidate is welcome to start there if they are a strong live-in fit. The family will transition to their home in Brickell, Miami in September 2026, where this role will be based for the remainder of the year going forward, with summers returning to New Jersey annually. The mother is home most of the time and deeply involved in her children's daily lives. She is not looking for someone to replace her presence but rather someone who can move seamlessly alongside her, anticipate what needs to be done, and bring a calm, capable, and professional energy to the household every single day. This is not a role for someone who needs constant direction. The ideal candidate understands where the line is between warm and professional and holds it with confidence.

The role is structured around the natural flow of the family's day. The typical schedule will be Monday through Friday from 8:00am until 6:00pm, with flexible required. Mornings begin with coverage during the older daughter's school drop off window, approximately 45 minutes, during which the candidate will handle the baby's breakfast and morning routine independently. From there, the day continues with coverage during the mother's gym time, roughly one hour, followed by lunch preparation, afternoon child engagement, dinner prep, and end of day cleanup and reset. The mother is rarely away from the home for more than a few hours at a time, but the right candidate must be fully comfortable managing the children on their own when she steps out. Flexibility is essential, as no two days look exactly the same with young children in the home.

Live-out is preferred for local Miami based candidates. For the New Jersey summer, live-in accommodations are available, with a private bedroom and bathroom provided at the Spring Lake home. The family is also open to a live-in arrangement in Miami for the right candidate who is not local and would consider an accommodation for that person. The right candidate will be open to traveling with the family domestically and internationally, including an annual trip to London and Disney trips, with all travel expenses covered by the family.

Responsibilities
  • Working collaboratively alongside the mother day to day while managing the children independently when she steps out
  • Preparing breakfast for the baby during the morning school drop off window
  • Preparing lunch and dinner for the children and occasional family meals a few nights per week, with a focus on organic home cooked meals
  • Tidying after meals and playtime, always keeping the home guest ready
  • Laundry, folding, and organizing the girls' clothing and the baby's wardrobe once he arrives
  • Resetting rooms and living spaces at the end of each day
  • Engaging the children in age-appropriate activities throughout the day
  • Newborn and infant support once the baby arrives in November
  • Being present and comfortable around the pool, though the mother supervises pool time directly and the candidate will not be solely responsible for pool supervision
  • Travel with the family to New Jersey summers and on domestic and international trips as needed
Qualifications

The ideal candidate is polished, self-directed, and genuinely professional. They understand that a warm working relationship and a friendly one are not the same thing, and they bring the kind of steady, reliable energy that a busy household with young children truly depends on. They have hands-on experience with infants, toddlers, and newborns, are comfortable with the natural unpredictability of life with small children and approach each day with flexibility and a positive attitude. Prior experience supporting a hands-on, present parent in the home is strongly preferred.

Requirements
  • Minimum five years of professional childcare or mother's helper experience
  • Newborn and infant experience required
  • Comfortable working alongside and in support of a present, hands-on mother
  • Cooking skills with a focus on organic, home cooked family meals
  • Comfortable with laundry, tidying, and household organization
  • Ability and willingness to travel domestically and internationally with the family
  • Valid passport required
  • Comfortable around water and in pool environments
  • Valid driver's license a plus
  • Legal to work in the US
Salary and Benefits
  • starting $35 per hour
  • PTO and Holidays
  • The family is open to discussing possible additional perks including a gym membership and work phone for the right long-term candidate.
  • All travel expenses are covered when traveling with the family.
