Job description

Are you someone who loves building, creating, and working behind the scenes to make memorable experiences happen? As a Public Event Production Technician, you'll play a key role in transforming the Indianapolis Zoo for some of our most beloved events all while supporting our mission to protect nature and inspire people to care for our world.
About the Role
The Public Event Production Technician is a hands-on member of the Public Events team responsible for the technical production and scenic elements that transform the Zoo throughout the year. This position collaborates with teams across the Zoo to build, install, maintain, and remove event scenery, lighting, props, decorations, and technical equipment. This is a full-time, 40 hours per week position in which shifts may vary due to public event schedules and peak season demands. This may require working weekends, holidays, and overtime as required.
Key Responsibilities
  • Support the production of signature Zoo events, including ZooBoo, Christmas at the Zoo, Animals and All That Jazz, xZOOberance, and other special events.
  • Coordinate and assist with the installation, strike, storage, and inventory of event materials.
  • Assist with construction projects, scenic fabrication, and repairs using hand and power tools.
  • Ensure all work is completed safely while following Zoo policies and applicable safety procedures.
  • Build, install, maintain, repair, and remove scenic elements, props, decorations, signage, lighting, and event infrastructure.

What We're Looking For
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Comfortable working independently and collaborating with cross-functional teams.
  • Positive attitude with a willingness to learn and contribute wherever needed.
  • High school diploma or equivalent required; trade or technical school certification is a plus.
  • Two or more years of experience in event production, technical theater, performing arts, construction, or a related field.
  • Must have and maintain a valid Indiana driver's license (or obtain one within sixty (60) days of hire date) and a driving record that is deemed insurable by the Indianapolis Zoo's insurance carrier.
