What Is a Litigation Paralegal?

A litigation paralegal provides support to a litigation attorney, from the pre-discovery stage to closing arguments. The specific responsibilities of litigation paralegals vary based on the specialization of the firm, but duties include gathering and filing all necessary court documentation, interviewing clients, and preparing exhibits for trial. As a litigation paralegal, you ensure that the attorney you are working with is well-prepared for court.

What are litigation paralegals?

Litigation paralegals are legal professionals who assist attorneys in managing all aspects of lawsuits and legal disputes. Their responsibilities include organizing case files, conducting legal research, drafting documents, managing discovery, and coordinating trial preparation. They play a critical role in helping lawyers prepare for court by ensuring that all necessary information and documentation are accurate and accessible. Litigation paralegals may also interact with clients, witnesses, and court personnel. While they support legal proceedings, they do not provide legal advice or represent clients in court.

What do you do as a litigation paralegal?

A litigation paralegal assists attorneys with case preparation by conducting legal research, organizing documents, drafting pleadings, and managing discovery. They often use legal software and must have strong organizational skills to support the litigation process from case intake to trial preparation.

What are some common challenges faced by litigation paralegals, and how can they be managed effectively?

Litigation paralegals often juggle multiple cases with tight deadlines, which can make time management and organization challenging. They must also adapt quickly to changing priorities as new evidence or legal strategies emerge. Effective management involves maintaining detailed calendars, prioritizing tasks, and using case management software to track documents and deadlines. Strong communication with attorneys and other team members is essential to ensure nothing falls through the cracks.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Litigation Paralegal, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Litigation Paralegal, you need a strong understanding of legal procedures, document management, and case preparation, typically supported by a paralegal certificate or associate’s degree. Familiarity with legal research databases (such as Westlaw or LexisNexis), e-discovery platforms, and case management software is essential. Exceptional organizational skills, attention to detail, and effective communication make a paralegal stand out in this demanding role. These competencies ensure efficient case management, support attorneys effectively, and contribute to successful litigation outcomes.

What is the difference between Litigation Paralegal vs Civil Litigation Assistant?

AspectLitigation Paralegal

While both roles support litigation teams, a Litigation Paralegal typically handles case preparation, document management, and legal research, often requiring paralegal certification. A Civil Litigation Assistant generally focuses on administrative tasks like scheduling, filing, and client communication, with less emphasis on legal research or document drafting. The Litigation Paralegal works closely with attorneys on substantive legal work, whereas the Civil Litigation Assistant provides clerical support. Both roles are vital in a litigation setting but differ in responsibilities and required credentials.

What is a litigation paralegal vs paralegal?

A litigation paralegal specializes in supporting attorneys with tasks related to lawsuits, such as preparing legal documents, managing discovery, and organizing case files for court proceedings. In contrast, a general paralegal may work in various legal areas and handle broader administrative or legal research duties. Litigation paralegals often require knowledge of court procedures and may assist with trial preparation.

What is the highest paid type of paralegal?

Litigation paralegals specializing in complex or high-stakes cases, such as corporate litigation or intellectual property, tend to earn higher salaries. Paralegals with advanced certifications, extensive experience, or proficiency in specialized tools like e-discovery software also typically command higher pay. Overall, those working in specialized or high-demand areas of litigation often have the highest earning potential among paralegals.

Can I be a litigation paralegal with no experience?

While some entry-level litigation paralegal positions may accept candidates with no prior experience, most require basic knowledge of legal procedures, document management, and familiarity with legal software. Gaining relevant skills through coursework, internships, or certifications can improve your chances of securing such a role.

About the Opportunity: Our client, an esteemed and rapidly expanding law firm in Raleigh, NC, is seeking a sophisticated and growth-minded Commercial Litigation Paralegal to join their practice.

This role is ideal for a professional who thrives on intellectual challenges and wants to step away from repetitive workflows to dive into high-stakes, complex business cases.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Manages case workflows for highly complex commercial, business, and corporate litigation matters.
  • Assists with extensive e-discovery, document reviews, and the organization of voluminous case files.
  • Drafts, proofs, and finalizes sophisticated legal documents, including pleadings, motions, subpoenas, and detailed correspondence.
  • Conducts in-depth factual and legal research, synthesizing findings clearly for attorney review.
  • Coordinates trial, hearing, and deposition preparation, including compiling master notebooks, managing exhibits, and coordinating schedules.
  • Maintains meticulous track of court deadlines, filings, and statutory requirements across various jurisdictions.
  • Serves as a reliable point of contact for corporate clients, experts, and court staff, maintaining the highest level of professional discretion.

Required Education & Experience:

  • 4 to 7 years of litigation paralegal experience, with a strong preference for exposure to commercial litigation or complex business disputes.
  • Demonstrated experience handling complex, multi-document cases.
  • Bachelor’s degree and/or a Paralegal Certification is highly preferred.
  • High proficiency in litigation technology, e-discovery platforms, and case management systems.

Key Skills & Attributes:

  • Sophisticated & Inquisitive Mindset: A strong desire to continuously learn and master new, diverse areas of business law.
  • Analytical Depth: Exceptional attention to detail with the ability to spot patterns and organize massive amounts of data in complex files.
  • Adaptability: Comfortable shifting focus between various types of commercial cases without requiring rigid templates.
  • Strong Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills suitable for interacting with high-profile business clients and elite legal counsel.

Compensation & Benefits: Our client offers a premium compensation package ranging from $80,000 to $100,000 ( DOE) plus performance bonuses, alongside deep mentorship and an explicit commitment to your professional development. Benefits include:

  • Generous 401(k) plan with employer match
  • Comprehensive Health, Dental, and Vision insurance options
  • Substantial Paid Time Off (PTO) and paid holidays
  • Short and Long-Term Disability & Life Insurance
  • A clear, defined track for long-term career growth

Our client is an Equal Opportunity Employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, or protected veteran status.
