Job description

Job Title: Spanish Hispanophone Literature & Culture, FT Faculty CFS Professional

The Department of Spanish and Portuguese at Brigham Young University announces a search for a candidate to fill a CFS-track (analogous to tenure-track) teaching faculty position. We are particularly interested in candidates whose teaching complements the current profile of literature and culture faculty within the department. Initial rank will be consistent with qualifications and experience. Posting End Date: 09/05/2026. Last day to apply is Friday, 09/04/2026 11:59 p.m. MST. Position Start Date: 8/1/2027.

Required Degree: PhD in Hispanic/Spanish literature, cultural studies, or equivalent. Foreign degrees acceptable. PhD in Portuguese, Comparative Literature, or a related field will be considered if the candidate can fulfill the duties and expectations of the position. The required degree must be completed by the start date.

Experience: Experience teaching Spanish courses at the university level. Fluency in written and spoken Spanish and English is also required. The ability to teach Portuguese literature/culture classes is also highly valued although not required.

Responsibilities
  • Teaching (70%) – Teach nine courses per year (27 credit hours), including Introduction to Hispanic Literature, Cultures of Spain and Spanish America, Third-Year Spanish Reading, Grammar, and Culture, and/or other courses depending on expertise. Advise and mentor undergraduate students.
  • Professional Assignment (10%) – Participate in academic conferences and workshops (at BYU and other venues), sharing and learning best practices in teaching Spanish language, literature, and culture.
  • Citizenship (20%) – Serve on departmental, college, and university committees. Work in a respectful and collegial manner with all colleagues, including department faculty and staff, adjunct faculty, and student instructors.
Duties and Expectations

This professional-track teaching position has a course‑load of 4‑3‑2 (27 credit‑hours per year). While teaching faculty do not have a research/publication expectation, the successful candidate is expected to stay current in the field through various professional development activities.
