What is a literacy coach?

Literacy coaches are educational professionals who support teachers in improving reading and writing instruction for students. They work collaboratively with teachers by modeling lessons, providing feedback, analyzing student data, and offering professional development. Their goal is to enhance teaching practices and boost student literacy achievement across grade levels. Literacy coaches can work in elementary, middle, or high schools, and often help implement school-wide literacy initiatives.

What does a literacy coach do?

As a literacy coach, you assist teachers in helping students develop their reading skills. Your responsibilities often include providing specialized support to teachers by delivering instructional strategies and offering classroom support. Although the end recipient of your knowledge is the student, your primary client is always the teacher, who you work with as a partner. You must work with the teacher’s pedagogy and curriculum as you help their students learn to read. Due to the increasing use of data, you may also engage in data collection and analysis. You also perform duties as a wider member of the school’s academic team.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a literacy coach, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Literacy Coach, you need a strong background in literacy instruction, curriculum development, and often a degree in education with relevant teaching certification. Familiarity with assessment tools, instructional technology, and data analysis systems is typically required. Outstanding communication, collaboration, and mentoring skills help Literacy Coaches effectively support and guide teachers. These competencies are crucial for driving instructional improvement, fostering student literacy growth, and building teacher capacity.

How does a literacy coach typically collaborate with classroom teachers to improve student outcomes?

Literacy Coaches work closely with classroom teachers by providing ongoing support, modeling instructional strategies, and facilitating professional development aimed at enhancing literacy instruction. They often observe lessons, co-teach, and offer constructive feedback tailored to specific classroom needs. This collaborative approach fosters a culture of continuous improvement, helps teachers implement research-based practices, and ultimately leads to better student reading and writing outcomes. Effective communication and building trusting relationships are key components of this partnership.

Lead the future of work at HODGE. Drive enterprise AI strategy, governance, and adoption while empowering teams across the organization to unlock measurable business value through responsible artificial intelligence. This position is an onsite role based in our Enterprise office in Dubuque, Iowa.

Join us as an AI Enablement Strategist where you will be responsible for accelerating HODGE’s adoption of artificial intelligence and process automation as enterprise capabilities. The role serves as a central lead for discovery, prioritization, governance, and cultural adoption of AI across enterprise functions – Accounting, Finance, HR, IT, Operational Excellence, Marketing, and Training. The position does not build production solutions; it ensures the right problems are identified, prioritized, governed, and handed off to IT, Operational Excellence, or functional teams for delivery, while remaining accountable for outcomes. The role staffs the AI Steering Committee, chairs the AI Champion Group, and partners across departments to coach leaders and teams on responsible AI usage, measure business impact, and build durable enterprise AI literacy. This role works with a high degree of visibility and cross-functional collaboration working directly with executive leadership and Directors across the enterprise.

Benefits
  • Balance: We understand the importance of a healthy work-life balance. At HODGE, you can count on having holidays off (while still getting paid for them), allowing you to spend quality time with your family and friends.
  • Great Benefits: We value our employees' well-being and offer a comprehensive benefits package. Enjoy paid time off, 401k, medical, dental, and vision insurance, life insurance, an employee assistance program, wellness program, and much more!
  • Competitive Pay: We offer competitive wages. Your hard work will be recognized and rewarded!
  • Safety First: At HODGE, we prioritize safety above all else. Your well-being is our top priority. We protect our work family by maintaining safety policies, including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and proactive hazard identification.
  • Ambition: We're a team of ambitious individuals who are dedicated to achieving great things together. We embrace the "Whatever It Takes" mindset, ensuring that we go the extra mile to deliver exceptional results.
  • Friendly Work Environment: Join a team that feels like family! You'll be supported by colleagues who genuinely care about your success and well-being.
What You'll do
  • AI Enablement & Cultural Stewardship: Coach leaders and teams on responsible AI use and effective prompting practices. Build enterprise AI literacy that supports and enhances human judgment. Reinforce departmental ownership of processes and protect HODGE culture through the AI transition.
  • Champion Group Leadership: Revive and chair the AI Champion Group as the network for use-case piloting and cultural adoption. Refresh membership, establish charter, set cadence, and maintain a healthy use-case backlog.
  • Steering Committee Staffing: Staff the AI Steering Committee with intake, prioritization recommendations, guardrail proposals, and impact reporting. Translate departmental opportunities into prioritization decisions the Committee can act on.
  • Process Discovery & Opportunity Identification: Sit with departments to observe, document, and map priority workflows. Distinguish manual improvements, automation opportunities, and AI-enabled opportunities. Quantify baseline effort, cycle time, quality, and cost impacts.
  • Prioritization & Handoff: Own Manage intake and prioritization of automation and AI initiatives. Route builds to IT, Operational Excellence, or business units based on defined guidelines. Coordinate cross-functional initiatives through a unified brief with a designated business owner.
  • Measurement & Communication: Standardize reporting on savings, cycle time, and quality improvements. Maintain the Wins repository and convert use cases into quantified ROI. Communicate wins and lessons learned Enterprise-wide.
  • Continuous Improvement: Conduct ninety-day post-implementation reviews for delivered initiatives. Maintain an iteration backlog alongside the new build backlog to support continuous improvement after go-live.
  • Cross-Functional Partnership: Collaborate with Operations, IT, Operational Excellence, Finance, HR, Marketing, and Training to align people, process, and technology in support of strategic goals. Lead through influence and partnership across teams.
  • Safety: Ensure a safe working environment by upholding safety protocols and promoting a safety-first culture among all employees.
  • Demonstrate HODGE Values: Model HODGE core values of Family, Integrity, Ambition, Respect, and Balance. Uphold, support, and promote all company policies and procedures. Demonstrate that success comes from treating people like family.
