Job Description
The Systems Administrator II supports Stetson University by providing systems administration for the Windows server environment, including server, storage, and virtualization management, file share management, database backup, and basic administration of core Linux systems, while serving as the second-level (L2) escalation point for Help Desk-raised issues across the DeLand, Gulfport, and Tampa campuses. This position also carries entry-level cybersecurity responsibilities and is intended as a growth path toward senior systems administration and engineering-level work. In alignment with , the Systems Administrator II will promote a people-centered, high-performing, relationship-rich culture of inclusive excellence.
Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities: Employment duties include, but are not limited to:
  • Administer all Windows servers, including Active Directory, Exchange, and file and print services.
  • Serve as second-level (L2) escalation support for Help Desk tickets involving Windows, Active Directory, and Microsoft 365, escalating unresolved issues to Systems Administrator III or engineering-level staff as needed.
  • Provide primary systems administration for DeLand campus and backup support for Gulfport and Tampa campuses.
  • Administer the university's virtualization and storage environment.
  • Perform basic administration of Linux systems, including patching, updates, reboots, and routine maintenance.
  • Create and manage Active Directory accounts and develop PowerShell scripts to automate routine tasks.
  • Administer DeLand campus file shares, NTFS permissions, and security groups.
  • Perform backup and routine maintenance for university database systems and monitor database performance.
  • Assist with entry-level cybersecurity tasks, including security monitoring and incident response support.
  • Assist in disaster recovery planning and management.
  • Research emerging technologies and recommend improvements to current systems and practices.
  • Communicate technical issues and resolutions clearly to Help Desk staff, including student workers, and to non-technical end users, and maintain clear, professional ticket documentation.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects, activities, and tasks simultaneously.
  • Requires some physical effort, including standing, walking, frequent lifting (5-70 lbs.), and manual dexterity in the operation of equipment.
  • May require extended periods of time at a keyboard and screen; perceptual demands for sound, form, texture, and depth.
  • Emergency situations or large-scale projects may require work hours outside the normal University schedule, including nights, weekends, and University holidays.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: The knowledge, skills, and abilities for this role include:
  • Strong experience with Active Directory, PowerShell script creation, and virtualization technologies (Hyper-V, VMware, or similar).
  • Working knowledge of Linux systems sufficient to navigate, patch, update, reboot, and perform routine maintenance tasks; deep Linux engineering expertise is not required.
  • Basic database administration skills, including backup procedures, performance monitoring, and maintenance tasks.
  • Basic cybersecurity knowledge, including security monitoring, incident response procedures, and security best practices.
  • Strong independent troubleshooting and research skills, with the ability to effectively self-direct investigation of unfamiliar issues using available resources.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to explain technical concepts clearly to both IT staff (including student workers) and non-technical end users.
  • Ability to write clear, professional ticket documentation.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Windows servers and desktop products, as well as facilitation and change management skills. Proven adherence to best practices throughout professional experience is essential.
  • Strong communication, training, and problem-solving skills, along with the ability to rapidly master new computing technologies, are essential.

Required Qualifications: This position requires:
  • Candidates holding a Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Cybersecurity, or a related field require a minimum of one to three years of relevant systems administration experience. Candidates without a degree require a minimum of three to five years of relevant systems administration experience, including Windows server administration and hands-on experience with server equipment and tools.

Ideal Candidate Qualifications: The ideal candidate's qualifications include:
  • Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Cybersecurity, or similar.
  • A self-starter who is comfortable independently researching and resolving unfamiliar technical problems.
  • Industry certifications such as MCSA, MCSE, ISC2 CC, CompTIA, or Azure/OCI-related credentials are desirable but not required.
  • In addition to technical skills, excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills are required.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously; excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with faculty, staff, and students.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft cloud platforms, including Microsoft 365, Entra ID, and Defender; familiarity with Azure and OCI is a plus.
  • Demonstrated interest in growing toward senior systems administration and engineering-level responsibilities.
  • High energy level; enjoys challenges and a fast-paced environment; demonstrates initiative and self-motivation.

Work Environment: Work is generally performed in a well-lit, temperature-controlled indoor environment, in a combination of office space and server and data center space; the latter may involve cooler temperatures, elevated equipment noise, and confined workspace. This position is based on the DeLand campus and provides backup systems support to the Gulfport and Tampa campuses remotely; on-site travel to those campuses is not typically required, though occasional travel (up to once per year) may be requested.
Pay Grade: 8
Work authorization sponsorship may be available for this position. However, sponsorship is contingent upon the non-applicability of the visa petition fees outlined in the relevant Executive Order signed September 19, 2025. Due to the recent federally-mandated increased financial expense, the university is not in a position to absorb this significantly increased cost of sponsorship for new H-1B petitions at this time.
