As a lighting specialist, your job is to install, test, and modify lighting systems. Many lighting specialists work through the American Lighting Association (ALA), which helps to enforce national standards for lighting safety and quality in different environments. To fulfill the duties and responsibilities of this job, you may coordinate with lighting engineers or technologists, check relevant legislation to ensure all lighting is up to code, or give presentations on different types of lighting and what you recommend for any given environment. Lighting specialists normally work regular hours, but employers may call you in for emergency support if there is an unexpected problem with their lighting systems.
