What is a life coach?

A Life Coach helps people succeed in meeting their goals through counseling and encouragement. As a Life Coach, you listen to your client’s situation and needs, helping them find opportunities and solutions to overcome the obstacles一mental or otherwise一that are preventing them from meeting their goals. You work with your clients on many aspects and difficulties in their life, such as coping with grief, job loss, relationship challenges, and financial wellbeing. You do not attempt to solve your client’s problems for them. Instead, you provide information, outside perspective, and a safe place to process their challenges so that they can find their own best path to success.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a life coach, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Life Coach, you need excellent communication, active listening, and goal-setting skills, often supported by a coaching certification from organizations like the International Coach Federation (ICF). Familiarity with online coaching platforms, assessment tools, and client management software is typically required. Exceptional empathy, motivational abilities, and strong interpersonal skills help build trust and inspire clients to achieve personal growth. These competencies are vital for effectively guiding clients through challenges and empowering them to reach their full potential.

What challenges do life coaches face when supporting clients, and how can they manage them?

Life coaches often encounter challenges such as clients struggling with motivation, resistance to change, or unclear goals. To manage these effectively, coaches use active listening, powerful questioning, and goal-setting frameworks to help clients gain clarity and commitment. Regular self-reflection, professional supervision, and continuous learning also support coaches in handling diverse client needs and maintaining professional boundaries. Building a trusting rapport and adapting coaching techniques to individual situations are key to overcoming these challenges.

What is the difference between Life Coach vs Therapist?

AspectLife CoachTherapist
CredentialsCertified life coach, coaching certificationLicensed mental health professional, license required
Work EnvironmentPrivate coaching sessions, workshopsClinics, private practices, hospitals
Industry UsagePersonal development, career coachingMental health, emotional well-being
FocusFuture goals, motivation, personal growthPast experiences, mental health issues

While both life coaches and therapists support personal growth, life coaches focus on future goals and motivation without addressing mental health disorders. Therapists are licensed professionals who treat mental health conditions and explore past experiences. Understanding these differences helps individuals choose the right professional for their needs.

Is being a life coach a good career?

Being a life coach is a growing profession that involves helping clients achieve personal and professional goals through coaching techniques and active listening. Success in this field often requires certification, strong communication skills, and building a client base, with income potential varying widely based on experience and niche. It can offer flexible scheduling but also requires self-motivation and marketing efforts.

What qualifications do you need to become a life coach?

To become a life coach, there are no strict legal requirements, but many employers prefer candidates with relevant training or certification from recognized coaching programs. Skills such as active listening, communication, and goal-setting are essential, and obtaining a certification from organizations like the International Coach Federation (ICF) can enhance credibility and job prospects.

Organizational Life Coach - West Bend, Wisconsin

Delta Defense

West Bend, WI • On-site

Full-time

Medical, Dental, Vision, Life, PTO

Re-posted 18 days ago

Job description

ORGANIZATIONAL LIFE COACH
Because our people deserve someone who gives a shit.
West Bend, WI * Full-Time * People & Culture * License Required
At Delta Defense, we expect a lot from our team. That's not a warning -- it's a value. We run toward hard things. and sometimes hard things run toward us. That's where you come in.
Non-negotiable requirement: Active clinical licensure is required to apply.
  • You must hold one of the following licenses in good standing. No exceptions -- this role is authorized to diagnose and treat mental health and substance use disorders. PsyD, LCSW, LPC

High volume caseload:
  • This role serves a large, fast-moving organization. You'll manage a significant individual caseload alongside group programming, leader support, and org-wide initiatives. If you thrive under pressure and can triage without dropping the ball, read on.

Public speaking is part of this job -- in person and on screen:
  • You'll present at company-wide meetings, lead virtual and in-person training sessions, and show up in front of large groups regularly. Comfort behind a mic isn't a nice-to-have here. It's how you make an impact at scale.
What you'll do:
  • Provide one-on-one counseling for mental health and substance abuse - confidential, non-judgmental, and real.
  • Lead skills-based training sessions that actually help people navigate stress, burnout, and life.
  • Deliver virtual and in-person presentations to large groups - including company-wide meetings and culture events.
  • Show up weekly on the Delta Culture channel with resources that move the needle on wellbeing.
  • Partner with leaders and teams on relationship dynamics, communication, and performance health.
  • Facilitate New Employee Culture Training - shape how people enter this place.
  • Connect employees to family, caregiver, and mental health resources when life gets complicated.
  • Step in for crisis intervention - because sometimes urgency is the job.
  • Track non-PHI data to make the organization measurably healthier over time.
What you bring:
  • Active PsyD, LCSW, or LPC licensure - see above. This is the starting line, not a differentiator.
  • Master's or graduate degree in social work, psychology, or counseling with 5+ years of clinical experience.
  • Proven ability to manage a high caseload without burning out or burning bridges.
  • Demonstrated comfort and experience with public speaking - virtual and in person, small groups and large audiences.
  • Strong clinical ethics and a locked-down approach to confidentiality.
  • Growth-minded, mission-aligned, and not easily rattled.
  • Someone who genuinely believes in the right of responsible Americans to protect themselves and their families.
Why you'll love this role:
  • Help people grow in a mission-driven business environment where your focus is on coaching and development-not navigating insurance requirements or clinical documentation.
  • Partner with highly motivated, engaged employees who are invested in their personal and professional growth.
  • Apply organizational psychology in meaningful ways to strengthen individuals, teams, and the organization.
  • Design and deliver coaching resources, workshops, and development programs that have a lasting impact.
  • Expand your own expertise through continuous learning and the opportunity to shape innovative approaches to employee development.
  • Join a values-driven culture where continuous improvement isn't just encouraged-it's how we operate.
  • Enjoy a consistent Monday-Friday schedule with no routine evenings or weekends, supporting a healthy work-life balance.

"We don't do anything halfway. We show up with purpose, follow through, and hold the line on the details others ignore." That includes how we take care of our own.
BUILT DIFFERENT. IN EVERY WAY.
Complacency Kills • Growth Mindset • We Give a Shit • Progress Over Perfection • Lead with Humility • There's No "Someone Else"
Why work at Delta Defense?
Because culture matters-and ours is legit.
  • Fast-paced, mission-driven, and genuinely fun
  • #25 on The Wall Street Journal's 2025 Top 100 America's Most Loved Workplaces
  • Competitive base salary and eligibility in company incentive bonus plan
  • 23 Days of Personal Time Off, 8 Company Holidays, plus paid day of Volunteer Service annually
  • Robust Insurance Coverage Options: Medical, Dental, Vision, HSA, FSA, Life, STD, & LTD
