What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Librarian, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Librarian, you typically need a Master’s degree in Library Science (MLS or MLIS), strong research skills, and organizational abilities. Familiarity with library management systems, digital archives, and cataloguing tools like MARC or Dewey Decimal Classification is essential. Excellent communication, customer service, and problem-solving skills help librarians engage diverse patrons and collaborate with colleagues. These competencies ensure effective resource management, support lifelong learning, and enhance community access to information.

What do library workers do?

Library workers assist patrons in finding and borrowing materials, organize and maintain collections, and help with research and technology use. They may also plan educational programs, manage digital resources, and support community events. The specific duties depend on the role, such as librarian, library assistant, or technician, but all focus on making information accessible to the public.

What Qualifications Do I Need to Get a Job in a Library?

Different library jobs have varying qualifications. To become a librarian, you need a master’s degree in either library science or information studies. This is important if you work with students in an academic setting. You also need some research experience and a strong awareness of research procedures and tools. Library technicians and assistants need to have a high school diploma or a GED certificate and strong administrative skills. If you are seeking a job in library computer support, you need at least a bachelor’s degree in information technologies.

What are some common challenges faced by library staff when adapting to digital resources and technology?

Library staff often encounter challenges such as staying current with rapidly evolving digital platforms, assisting patrons with varying levels of tech literacy, and integrating new technologies with existing catalog systems. Balancing traditional library services with digital resource management requires ongoing training and flexibility. However, many libraries provide professional development opportunities and foster a supportive team environment to help staff successfully navigate these changes.

Job Description

We are looking for a senior product designer to take the lead across a growing set of products, all tied together by a shared design system which you will own. That includes building the component library, design tokens, and the patterns that keep everything accessible, consistent, and easy to ship. You'll also put that system to work by designing new AI-powered experiences end to end. There's one designer across the whole portfolio, so the work has to scale. The system you build is how that happens.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Own the design system as a product. This includes the component library, design tokens, and the accessibility and interaction patterns that teams use every day, along with clear documentation and guidance.
  • Work closely with engineering to make sure the system lives in code, not just in design files, and stays consistent across both.
  • Set and maintain accessibility standards and interaction patterns across the full product portfolio.
  • Turn product strategy and customer needs into end-to-end UX flows for new products, including edge cases, error states, and the details that make the experience feel complete.
  • Create clickable, mid-fidelity prototypes quickly to support demos, align stakeholders, and hand work off to engineering.
  • Own visual and UI design, making sure everything feels polished and on brand across both authenticated and public experiences.
  • Partner day to day with engineers in a fast, AI-supported workflow. Provide clear specs and help triage UX issues through launch.
  • Help define what makes each product valuable to the customer and make sure that shows up clearly in the experience.
Qualifications
  • 6+ years of product or UX design experience, with shipped consumer or SaaS products.
  • Experience building and owning a design system or component library, including design tokens, documented components, versioning, and adoption across multiple products or teams.
  • Strong interaction and visual UI design skills. You can do both well, not just one.
  • Working knowledge of accessibility standards (such as WCAG) and how to build them into a system from the start.
  • Proficiency with modern design and prototyping tools like Figma, including component and variant systems, plus the ability to create fast, clickable prototypes.
  • Ability to design complete experiences, including error states, edge cases, and unhappy paths.
  • Comfortable working at high velocity with engineering in tight loops, with a focus on scaling design through systems rather than one-off screens.

Nice to Have:

  • Experience partnering with engineers on the front-end implementation of a design system (e.g., a component library in React / Next.js).
  • Experience designing AI or conversational interfaces.
  • Comfort in an AI-assisted design-to-code workflow.
  • Insurance, fintech, or other regulated-industry experience.
