What is a library associate?

Library Associates are staff members who assist with the daily operations of a library. They help patrons locate materials, check out and return books, organize resources, and may assist with library programs or events. Library Associates often provide customer service, answer basic reference questions, and support librarians in maintaining an organized and welcoming environment. Their responsibilities can vary depending on the size and type of library, but they play a vital role in ensuring smooth library operations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a library associate, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Library Associate, you need strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and typically a high school diploma or equivalent, with some positions preferring library science coursework. Familiarity with library management systems, cataloging software, and basic computer applications is usually required. Excellent customer service, communication, and problem-solving skills help you effectively assist patrons and support library operations. These abilities are vital for maintaining an organized, accessible library environment and ensuring a positive user experience.

What are some common challenges library associates face when assisting patrons, and how can they effectively address them?

Library Associates frequently encounter challenges such as helping patrons locate specific materials, assisting with technology (like printers or public computers), and managing multiple requests during busy periods. To address these challenges effectively, it's important to develop strong communication and problem-solving skills, stay up-to-date with library catalog systems, and remain patient and resourceful when guiding patrons. Collaborating closely with librarians and other staff members also ensures that patrons receive comprehensive support and that workloads are balanced during peak times.

Library Associates typically have a high school diploma and focus on customer service and daily library operations. In contrast, Library Technicians usually hold an associate degree and handle more technical tasks like cataloging and collection management. Both roles are vital in library settings, but Library Technicians often require more specialized training and perform more technical duties.

Can you get a job at a library with no experience?

Library associate positions often do not require prior experience, as on-the-job training is typically provided. Employers may look for strong customer service skills, organizational abilities, and a willingness to learn, making it possible for entry-level candidates to qualify. Some libraries may prefer or require a high school diploma or equivalent, but specific experience is usually not mandatory for starting roles.

Job description

Description:

Booth and Associates is seeking a Senior Power Platform Developer who enjoys being hands-on while guiding a small team. In this role, you will work directly alongside two developers to design, build, and deploy applications that support our engineering and operational needs. You will be a primary builder of solutions while ensuring the team follows best practices, uses reusable components, and delivers scalable tools across the Microsoft Power Platform.

We are looking to fill this position in either the Baton Rouge, Charlotte, Summerville, or Texas offices.

This position will be in-office.

Requirements:
  • Hands-on Development: Actively build Canvas Apps, Model-driven Apps, and Power Pages, alongside complex Power Automate flows and Dataverse solutions.
  • Technical Mentorship: Work closely with two developers to provide "in-the-code" support, troubleshooting, and collaborative solution design.
  • Solution Architecture: Lead the design of data models and app structures to ensure they are practical, scalable, and maintainable.
  • Requirements Translation: Partner with business users to turn functional needs into technical reality, often prototyping solutions yourself.
  • Data & Automation: Build and maintain Dataflows (Power Query) and Power Automate integrations to streamline data movement and business processes.
  • Standardization: Create and maintain a library of reusable components and templates that you and the team will use to speed up development.
  • Deployment Support: Lead the team through the release process using Power Platform Pipelines and manage version control.
  • Safety Values: Support and contribute to a company-wide safety culture by following established safety standards, policies, and best practices, helping to ensure a safe environment for employees, clients, and the public.
  • The above statements describe the general nature and level of work being performed by individuals assigned to this classification. This is not intended to be an exhaustive list of all responsibilities and duties required of personnel so classified.

Required Qualifications

  • Experience: A minimum of 3 years of hands-on experience building in the Microsoft Power Platform, with a natural ability to lead and support others.
  • Technical Mastery: Deep, "builder-level" expertise in Canvas Apps, Model-driven Apps, Power Pages, Power Automate, Dataverse, and SharePoint.
  • Data Design: Strong understanding of Entity Relationship Diagrams (ERDs) and relational data modeling.
  • Governance & ALM: Practical experience with DLP policies, connector governance, and Power Platform deployment pipelines.
  • Collaborative Mindset: A desire to work as part of a team, helping others solve technical hurdles while managing your own development tasks.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in the Engineering or Utility industries.
  • Familiarity with SQL, SSMS, and the Power Platform Admin Center.
  • Experience establishing development standards or shared UI/UX libraries.
