What is a library assistant?
What is the difference between Library Assistant vs Library Technician?
| Aspect | Library Assistant | Library Technician |
|---|---|---|
| Required Credentials | High school diploma or equivalent; some roles may prefer post-secondary coursework | Post-secondary education or certification in library technology or related field |
| Work Environment | Public, school, or academic libraries; routine tasks assisting patrons and organizing materials | More technical tasks, cataloging, managing digital resources, supporting library systems |
| Employer & Industry Usage | Common in public and educational libraries; entry-level position | Found in larger libraries, academic institutions, and specialized settings; requires more technical skills |
The main difference between a Library Assistant and a Library Technician lies in their responsibilities and required qualifications. Library Assistants handle routine patron service and organization tasks, often with minimal formal education. In contrast, Library Technicians perform more technical duties like cataloging and managing digital resources, requiring additional training or certification. Both roles are essential in supporting library operations, but Library Technicians typically have a higher level of technical expertise and responsibilities.

What does a Library Assistant do?
Library assistants support the head librarian in operating the library and maintaining its materials. Other responsibilities include cataloging books, movies, audio resources, reference materials, slides, and microfilm. Library assistants inspect these items regularly for damage or missing pieces, especially while they are checking out resources to library patrons. As a library assistant, you must enjoy helping visitors locate materials, as well as providing technical assistance as needed. While a library assistant job does not require education beyond a high school diploma or equivalent, job seekers pursuing a career as a librarian will need a master’s degree in library science or a related field.

About the American Connection Corps:
The American Connection Corps (ACC), an AmeriCorps program of Lead For America (LFA), is a service fellowship program aimed at helping communities build the digital connectivity necessary to expand opportunity and economic mobility, ranging from healthcare access to quality employment.
ACC Members spend a year serving with locally-rooted organizations, helping address the digital divide and strengthen access to opportunity. Through their service, they gain hands-on experience, build in-demand skills, and explore career pathways while making a tangible impact in their communities.
About Hillsboro Public Library
Our mission is "For Everyone - Para Todos". We have two library branches that serve our community of about 110,000 people, including one of the most diverse populations in the state. We are a department of the City of Hillsboro and a partner in the WCCLS cooperative, where we work together with 15 other nearby libraries to serve patrons across Washington County.
Position Overview
Our ACC Member will serve as a Digital Navigator at Shute Park Library, helping advance digital equity and inclusion by providing direct support to community members navigating technology barriers. The Member will provide direct assistance with foundational digital skills, internet access, devices, and online services, while supporting the delivery of digital literacy workshops tailored to diverse community needs. Through patient, culturally responsive, and relationship-centered service, the Member will help individuals access essential resources, educational opportunities, employment tools, and community connections. Their service will strengthen trust between the library and the community while expanding access to technology resources and building digital confidence for underserved populations.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide one-on-one digital navigation support to community members, assisting with foundational computer skills, email setup, internet use, file transfers, online applications, and smartphone/tablet basics.
- Support the delivery of digital literacy workshops for diverse audiences through accessible instruction, including bilingual support when possible, in collaboration with library staff.
- Assist patrons in accessing affordable internet options, digital resources, and device acquisition programs.
- Build trusted relationships with community members through patient, culturally responsive, and customer-centered service.
- Support the maintainance of accurate records of patron interactions, workshop participation, outreach efforts, and measurable outcomes to support program assessment and service improvements.
- Serve collaboratively with library staff to identify emerging digital literacy needs, outreach opportunities, and training initiatives.
- Communicate and provide consistent feedback to library staff, reporting challenges, sharing successes, and collaborating on solutions.
- Communicate and provide consistent feedback to library staff regarding challenges, successes, and service needs, including submission of quarterly summary reports.
- Under staff guidance and direction, support submission of quarterly summary reports related to patron interactions, workshops, outreach efforts, and measurable outcomes.
- Additional projects may include supporting access to makerspace tools, creative technology resources, and digital learning opportunities that are consistent with allowable AmeriCorps service activities and guidelines.
- Collaborate with existing library partners and support efforts to cultivate new community connections to strengthen digital inclusion efforts and expand equitable access to resources and services.
Additional Preferred Competencies
- Bilingual or multilingual skills to better serve our diverse community STRONGLY preferred.
- Strong interpersonal and customer service skills, with the ability to quickly build trust and rapport with patrons from diverse backgrounds.
- Experience working with diverse populations, including seniors, immigrants, and underserved groups.
- Flexibility and adaptability to support services across both library locations.
- Initiative in supporting the development and delivery of workshops and/or trainings.
- Strong organizational skills for tracking data, reporting outcomes, preparing materials, and managing multiple priorities.
- Demonstrated cultural humility and commitment to equitable, inclusive public service.
