Program Description:  

Liberty Partnerships Program 

The Liberty Partnerships Program is sponsored by the New York State Education Department and St John's University. It is designed to provide support services to high school students who are identified as having the potential to pursue a college education but need assistance to complete secondary school. The program provides a broad range of services designed to increase academic skill development, motivation to succeed, and foster the personal development of the students in the program. These year-round services include tutoring, counseling, mentoring, developmental courses, and social and enrichment activities. The program consists of a Director, Assistant Director, Parent Coordinator, College Readiness Coordinator, 2 part-time Graduate Assistants, and a team of part-time teachers and college tutors, mentors, and interns. The ELA Teacher is responsible for providing instruction and tutorial services in ELA during the LPP Saturday and after-school program located at John Adams High School and the SJU campus on Saturdays. 

Responsibilities:

  • Provide academic instruction and tutoring in the areas of English Language Arts (ELA). 

  • Prepare students for the NYS Regents and the college application essay.

  • Manage SAT prep and homework assistance. 

  • Aid the student in preparing for the transition to college, including assisting in preparing a personal statement for college entry. 

  • Collaborate with High School Liaisons and/or school personnel to design and implement academic interventions for students. 

  • Assist in coordinating tutorial services, conducting tutorial training, and supervising tutorial staff. 

  • Exhibit great classroom management skills that enable learning for all students. 

  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Project Director. 

Qualifications: 

  • Master’s degree in education. 

  • State certification or college teaching experience; 

  • Three years of teaching experience at the secondary or collegiate level; 

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills; 

  • Knowledge of NYS Learning Standards and Common Core; 

  • Ability to inspire and motivate youth; 

  • Deep-rooted passion in serving students and helping them achieve their goals; 

  • Preference given to an educator who currently serves as a full-time teacher at any of our target high schools. 

Compensation: Min: $50 hourly (based on experience and education). 

Position type:

Part-Time 3-6 hours weekly on Saturdays and some after-school opportunities. 

In compliance with NYC’s Pay Transparency Act, the hourly salary for this position is $50.
