POSITION SUMMARY

Under the direction of the Aquatics Director, the Aquatic Program Coordinator is responsible for the strategic development, operational management, and quality assurance of all swim lesson programs at the Santa Monica Family YMCA. This role ensures delivery of safe, high-quality, engaging aquatic instruction aligned with YMCA best practices and community needs.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Design, implement, and continuously improve the YMCA swim lesson program, ensuring it meets safety standards and addresses the developmental needs of all participants.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of YMCA Swim Lesson Instruction and maintain certification.
  • Conduct regular program evaluations, gather participant/parent feedback, and implement program improvements.
  • Assist with the recruitment, hiring, training, and supervision of swim instructors and support staff.
  • Provide ongoing coaching and professional development to ensure excellence in teaching and safety practices. Assist with hosting regular mandatory in-service meetings.
  • Schedule staff for all swim lessons, ensuring appropriate instructor-to-student ratios.
  • Maintain accurate registration rosters, attendance, certifications, and staff documentation.
  • Ensure all classes are running at capacity; cancel classes with low enrollment as necessary and adjust schedules accordingly.
  • Provides coverage for swimming lessons as needed.Ensure proper coverage of pool and provide "on-call" support as needed.
  • Ensure swim instructors are following YMCA standards for swim lessons, including progression standards. Create/Implement/Manage progression certificates for instructors.
  • Collaborate with the Member Services team to communicate class offerings, enrollment procedures, and schedule updates.
  • Support Director with the promotion of swim lessons and other Aquatics programming within the community, including partnerships with schools or outreach events, ensuring classes are at capacity every month.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for swim lesson inquiries and parent communication.
  • Resolve conflicts or issues with participants or parents in a timely and empathetic manner.
  • Ensure all lessons comply with YMCA and state/local health and safety guidelines.
  • Conduct and document regular safety audits of pool area and lesson procedures.
  • Support the Aquatics Director in responding to emergencies and maintaining a safe aquatic environment.
  • Monitor daily pool operations to adhere to all state, local, and YMCA health and safety regulations.Ensure accurate records of pool chemical levels and facility maintenance are maintained.
  • Any other duties delegated by the Aquatics Director.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • High school diploma or equivalent; Associate's or Bachelor's degree in recreation, education, or related field preferred.
  • Minimum 2 years experience teaching swim lessons or managing aquatic programs.
  • Supervisory or leadership experience in aquatics.
  • Experience with Daxko, Google Suite, Excel, and Daxko Engage
  • Current certifications in:
    • Swim Instructor (YMCA preferred)
    • American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor
  • CPR for the Professional Rescuer
  • Child abuse prevention training within 30 days of hire date
  • Ability to maintain certification-level physical and mental readiness
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work harmoniously with others
  • Must demonstrate the four core values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility

SCHEDULE

  • Sunday: 7:30-4:00pm
  • Monday-Thursday: 11-7:30pm
