Legal Research Internship information

What is a legal research internship?

A Legal Research Internship is a temporary position, typically for students or recent graduates, where individuals gain practical experience by assisting lawyers, law firms, or legal departments with research tasks. Interns are often responsible for researching case law, statutes, regulations, and legal precedents, as well as drafting memos and summarizing findings. This internship offers valuable exposure to how legal research is conducted in a professional setting and helps interns develop key analytical and writing skills. It is a great opportunity to learn about different areas of law and build a foundation for a future legal career.

What types of projects and tasks can I expect to work on during a legal research internship?

As a Legal Research Intern, you can expect to assist attorneys and legal teams by conducting in-depth research on statutes, case law, and legal precedents relevant to ongoing cases or projects. You'll likely help draft memoranda, summarize findings, and support the preparation of legal documents. Interns often collaborate with other interns and legal professionals, gaining exposure to a variety of practice areas and courtroom procedures. This hands-on experience provides a strong foundation for understanding legal reasoning and the practical application of law in a professional setting.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a legal research intern, and why are they important?

A Legal Research Intern must possess strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and a foundational understanding of legal principles, often supported by progress toward a law degree. Familiarity with legal research tools such as Westlaw, LexisNexis, and citation management systems is typically required. Excellent written communication, time management, and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively are valuable soft skills in this role. These skills ensure thorough, accurate research that supports effective case preparation and contributes to the success of legal teams.

What is the difference between Legal Research Internship vs Legal Assistant?
