About the Role:
The Learning Skills Specialist plays a vital role in supporting student success, academic achievement, and retention at Brock University with a focus on student-athlete support and STEM-related academic support. Working within Learning Services, this position provides individual and group-based instruction in study skills, academic writing, learning strategies, and academic integrity. Through workshops, presentations, one-on-one consultations, and specialized support programs for at-risk students, the Learning Skills Specialist empowers students from all disciplines to develop the skills, confidence, and resilience needed to achieve their academic goals.
The successful candidate will be passionate about student development, skilled in facilitating engaging learning experiences, and committed to fostering an inclusive and supportive campus community.
The Learning Skills Specialist will:
- Facilitate non-credit courses and academic support programs designed to enhance the success of at-risk students.
- Deliver engaging workshops, classroom presentations, and learning sessions on topics such as study skills, time management, academic writing, learning strategies, and academic integrity.
- Provide individualized consultations to assess student needs and develop personalized learning plans and academic success strategies.
- Establish supportive relationships with students and connect them with appropriate campus resources and services when needed.
- Create, update, and deliver instructional materials, including presentations, handouts, activities, and learning resources.
- Evaluate student assessments and provide timely, constructive, and encouraging feedback.
- Monitor and maintain accurate records of student participation, attendance, consultations, and program outcomes.
- Collaborate with colleagues to assess program effectiveness and recommend improvements based on student needs and emerging trends.
- Support and mentor peer leaders, tutors, or student staff involved in program delivery.
- Participate in student engagement and retention initiatives, including orientation programs, academic success events, and campus-wide learning activities.
- Consult and collaborate with faculty, academic departments, and campus partners to support student success and facilitate referrals.
- Promote Learning Services programs and contribute to initiatives that increase student awareness, engagement, and persistence.

- Exceptional organizational, time management, and record-keeping skills.
- Strong written communication skills, including the ability to provide clear and constructive feedback.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with faculty, staff, and campus partners.
- Sound judgment, professionalism, and confidentiality when working with student information.
- Commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, and student-centered service delivery.
- Proficiency with learning technologies, presentation software, and student information systems.
- Knowledge of student retention, engagement, and persistence initiatives.
- Experience developing and delivering workshops, courses, or educational programming.
- Familiarity with academic integrity principles and best practices in student learning support.
Preferred Assets and Skills:
- Post-secondary education in Education, Mathematics, Science, Business or a related field.
- Experience participating in or supporting athletics, varsity sports, coaching, or team environments, with an understanding of the unique needs of student-athletes.
- Experience supporting post-secondary students in academic success, learning skills, tutoring, coaching, advising, or student development environments.
- The ability to support students in developing effective learning strategies within STEM disciplines.
Hourly Rate:
- 34.13 per hour
